Listen up pop-punk fans, we’ve got a tasty treat for your eardrums in the form of a brand new track off Pittsburgh punk act Mace Ballard‘s upcoming EP Lanterns. I implore you to give “Aurora” a listen below but don’t let the catchiness of the tune full you, this song deals with a very real and very dark piece of our recent history. A piece that is tragically repeating itself with alarming frequency.
Vocalist Chris Daley comments on the song’s subject matter:
“This song was started during the Aurora, Colorado theater shootings. Some of the imagery and lines are very literal from the new stories “part of the show” referencing how at first, theatergoers thought the shooting was just sound effects, for example. There are many more references. When we were about to finalize the structure of this song, then the Newtown shootings happened. I thought about rewriting it. But it turns out, everything still applied. The repetitive nature of the gun-fueled tragedies is a sad song on repeat, tolerated by many. It’s essentially a challenge to the listener to think/speak/act differently the next time something like this happens, until enough progress is made that there won’t be a next time. “
