Social Distortion pick up new drummer, Scott Reeder of Fu Manchu

Go to fullsize imageJust two days after Social Distortion announced the departure of drummer Adam “Atom” Willard, they picked up Scott Reeder of Fu Manchu to play in Willard’s stead.  Reeder will make his first appearance with Social D on the band’s South American tour beginning in early April.  It is uncertain how the lineup change will affect the band’s recording of their new album, the follow-up to 2004’s Sex, Love & Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Social Distortion loses drummer!

socialdistrotionYesterday on their official website, Social Distortion announced that their drummer, Adam “Atom” Willard, is leaving the band to pursue his work in Angels & Airwaves. Willard took over percussion responsibilities of Social D after the departure of Charlie Quintana last year. Here’s what the D had to say,

Due to many foreseeable scheduling conflicts with his band Angels And Airwaves, we regret to announce that Atom Willard will no longer be able to continue on drums for Social Distortion. We know this was not an easy decision for him, but Atom is an incredible individual and we’re all better people for having him on board while we did. Atom will be sorely missed, but we wish him the very best.

It has not yet been announced who will be the next replacement drummer, which raises many questions about the new album currently in the works…

Social Distortion recording new album!

Oh, boy!  Oh, boy!  Oh, boy!

Legendary Orange County, CA, punk Mike Ness (Social Distortion frontman) said this week in an interview with Spinner (full article) that the band is “deep into” recording a new album.  As for the buzz on an acoustic album?  Ness says that “the acoustic thing is just a future project, which I think will be significant and equally important.  But as far as the priority goes, it’s more important now to get a studio record out that is a regular record.”

Social D has done a good job at not diluting their music by releasing just one new album on an average of every four years (that’s seven albums over the band’s massive 27-year span).  The upcoming album will see the return of guitarist Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham and bassist Brent Harding and will also welcome a new drummer, Adam “Atom” Willard (former drummer for Rocket From The Crypt and current Angels & Airwaves drummer).

What got me absolutely amped was when Ness stated that the new album is reminiscent of 1992’s Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell (by far my favorite Social D record).  Ness also said that he’ll be “bringing more elements of early New York 70s punk” and that it’s “a little more Johnny Thunders.”

Social Distortion’s last LP, Sex, Love, And Rock ‘N’ Roll, came out in 2004 on Time Bomb Recordings.

Social Distortion:’s interview with guitarist Jonny Wickersham

socialdistrotionCheck out this interview with Social Distortion‘s Guitarist Jonny “2Bags” Wilkerson. It’s been five years since the bands release of “Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and in the interview, he talks about new material for a possible 2010 release.

Here is what 2Bags had to say:

Hopefully we’re going to get busy when we get home from this current tour…Yeah, we’ve been road testing like four songs into the set and working on songs at sound checks and stuff, which we do pretty regularly. There’s one that we’ve been doing for quite a while called “Can’t Take it With You.” It’s a cool rocker.
