EP Review: PEARS – “…In Diapers” (2014 Demos EP)

PEARS is a hardcore band, in the purest sense of the term. There are no cookie monster vocals, shredding guitars, or heavy breakdowns to be found here. PEARS do it old school. They’re loud, in-your-face, and they’ve got a healthy sense of humor to boot (As one might surmise from the band’s name, their promo images, and their take on the FEAR logo). The band’s debut EP, …In Diapers, may have the word “demo” printed on its cover but there’s really no need for it to be there. As far as hardcore punk goes, this release is as fully fleshed out as it needs to be.

“Forever Sad” starts off things off with a damning Damaged-era Black Flag impression, from the urgency of the guitars to the barked vocals. “Terrible” tones down the Rollins-feel of the vocals, but keeps the fast pace going strong. “Victim to Be”, the EP’s final track, is probably the most melodic of the bunch, with a chorus that wouldn’t be out of place on a late 90’s / early 00’s skate punk comp while still retaining the vicious hardcore punk aspects during the verses and breakdown.

The band isn’t above poking fun of themselves in their lyrics (Best exemplified during moments such as “I can’t help it, it’s just who I am / Wah wah wah, this song is sad” or “Oh my God, this song is fucking terrible”), but they manage to pull off the humor without compromising the music in a way that makes it come off as gimmicky. Hardcore is a genre that can sometimes get so serious that it reaches a point where a band’s lyrics can come off as kind of silly when read out of context. PEARS acknowledge this with their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks without biting them.

…In Diapers is only three songs long, so it’s hard to truly get an accurate feel for PEARS. However, these three songs are all strong tunes and they certainly don’t cast a shadow of doubt for what’s to come from these NOLA natives. As long as their sound translates well into full length territory, there’s little reason to express concern, and maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t bet against PEARS any time soon.
