DS Show Review & Gallery: The Avengers, Kid Congo Powers, Frightwig (Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, 1/10/24)

San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall was built in 1907 after the Great Fire and Earthquake of 1906. After many uses and incarnations, it opened as a music venue in 1972 and has been open since. San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall was built in 1907 after the Great Fire and Earthquake of 1906. After many uses and incarnations, it opened as a music venue in 1972 and has been open since. This January, it hosted some veterans of the California punk scene for a night of great music.

Frightwig started in 1982 as an all-woman San Francisco punk band with a distinctly feminist message. They released two albums in the ’80s which proved to be an enormous influence on the Riot Girl movement. After breaking up in 1994, they reformed in 2014 and released a new record, We Need To Talk, on Label 51 Records.

Kid Congo Powers has been making music since the ’70s including stints with Gun Club, The Cramps and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, before founding The Pink Monkey Birds in 1997. Since then, they have released four albums on In The Red Records with a new album, That Delicious Vice, coming this April.

The Avengers were among the first punk bands to form in California in 1977, famously opening for The Sex Pistols at Winterland. Their initial incarnation only lasted two years and produced two EPs, the second of which was produced by Pistol Steve Jones and released after the band had split. Original members Penelope Houston and Greg Ingraham reformed the group in 1999 and have been playing regularly since 2004.

The Bomboras return to the Bay Area after 23 years and rock the East Bay

Electric Machine Gun Tits opened the show. They are a two-piece punk and roll band based in the Bay Area since 2015 consisting of Naoko Nozawa on vocals and synth and Tora Fujimoto on guitar and vocals. Ridiculously entertaining, intensely funny, and Naoko finished the set by flinging ramen at the audience.

San Francisco’s Frankie and the Pool Boys were up next. Much more mellow, straight-up instrumental surf rock, they have 3 CDs and 2 singles available on their bandcamp.

The Bomboras formed in Los Angeles in 1994 achieving a bunch of success in the ’90s garage rock revival with their high-energy mix of garage rock and surf. They broke up at San Francisco’s Bottom of The Hill in 2000, it was 21 years later that they reformed, and not until last Wednesday that they returned to the Bay Area. Led by Jake Cavaliere on organ/vocals and bass player/vocalist Shane Van Dyke, they still put on one hell of a show, setting Jake’s organ on fire at the end. They have a new release on MuSick Recordings, “Songs from The Beyond!”

As I am exceedingly old, I was at The Bomboras breakup show in San Francisco in 2000, and several members of their subsequent bands, The Legendary Invisible Mean and The Lords of Altamont became friends. So it was fantastic to see them in action again. Also, Electric Machine Gun Tits are the funniest damn band in the Bay Area. See all my photos below.

DS Show Review & Gallery: The Murder City Devils, Soft Palms (Great American Music Hall, San Francisco – 8/5/23)

The Murder City Devils make a rare one-off appearance at the venerable San Francisco venue. The Great American Music Hall was built in 1907. The Murder City Devils make a rare one-off appearance at the venerable San Francisco venue. The Great American Music Hall was built in 1907. It’s been a burlesque theater, jazz club, Moose Lodge, and in its current incarnation as one of San Francisco’s best music venues since 1973. When Seattle’s Murder City Devils booked a one-off show with Southern California’s Soft Palms as opener, we had to be there with our camera.

Soft Palms are guitarist/singer Julia Kugel (The Coathangers) and her husband drummer Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers). Their sound is more indy pop and gentle rock, though we found them engaging and likable.

The Murder City Devils were formed in 1996 in Seattle during the Pacific Northwest’s garage rock revival. Breaking up in 2001, reforming in 2006, recently they’ve been appearing on rare occasions, with this one-off show to a sell-out crowd being their first since April.

DS Show Review & Gallery: The Rinds, Creepy Crawlies, Class of ’77, Blobby KaBoom & The Least Friends (Kilowatt, San Francisco 8/11/23)

After more than 20 years, The Kilowatt in San Francisco’s Mission District has started hosting shows again, and even better, many of them are free. This August night (which was cold and foggy like most summer days in the city) we got a full line-up of local punk bands and a solid crowd.

The Bay Area has a long tradition of parody bands, and just plain silly punk bands. Blobby, KaBoom & The Least Friends follows this tradition with lead singer Nettie Kaboom appearing here with a spectacular wig that went flying halfway through their set, Fun, fast pop-punk.

Class of ’77 are a fairly new group of Bay Area punk veterans. Formed as a tribute to the sound of 1977 they plan to have original music available on their web site.

The Creepy Crawlies formed in 2020 but recently went through some lineup changes, adding Flexx Bronco’s drummer Thor Dsr and new bass player Zoran. They’ve also been getting attention in the Bay Area scene, drawing bigger crowds and playing bigger venues. They plan to record in the fall.

Closing out one great show were Oakland’s The Rinds who have been putting out solid garage punk for 12 years. Their 4th LP Everything Dimed! is soon come out on Sacramento’s Outloud Records

The SF Eagle is a leather bar, a fixture of San Francisco’s SOMA gay scene, however they’ve been having live shows on Thursdays for years and these have recently restarted. We went down last week for an evening of Bay Area punk and rock, and a record release party for Atomic Tide.

Erik Core were a last minute addition as the original opener had to cancel. Describing themselves as ‘Acoustic punk’, the sound was very bass-driven and melodic.

Atomic Tide are straight-up rock’n’roll. Singer Lydia Taylor brings fantastic energy to the stage, and the band are tight, focused rock. This show was a record release party for their new EP, “Night Crimes” on Big Tuff Records.

The Vaxxines are high-energy punk from Oakland, CA. We’ve been following them since they emerged from The Pathogens during the pandemic. Recently lead guitarist Noah re-joined and new singer KC joined the band, upping their stage presence and sound. In October they plan to release another EP on Bandcamp and tour Japan.

DS Show Review and Gallery: Flexx Bronco, The BPMs (Bender’s, San Francisco, 12/30/23)

A pre-New Year’s Eve rock’n’roll night at San Francisco’s best dive bar…Benders! The BPMs are so new that the paint is still drying on their logo. We believe that this was their 2nd show. The BPMs are so new that the paint is still drying on their logo. We believe that this was their 2nd show. However Eric, Atom and Mic are all veterans of the Bay Area music scene, and bring tight poppy punk.

Flexx Bronco don’t play so often anymore, as one of the members moved to Southern California. They’ve been around since 2001, and consistently bring driving hard rock, so we catch them when we can.

We missed Starcrawler at Punk Rock Bowling as they were playing on the 2nd stage while we jammed up against the main stage. So when they showed up in San Francisco two weeks later we just had to be there.

Opening up were The Vaxxines with new singer Chelsea Rose of Bite. The Vaxxines (and Chelsea) are old friends and put on their usual tight mix of garage punk.

Niis are woman-fronted hard garage punk from Los Angeles with powerful vocals. In July and August they’ll be touring the West and South, you should see them.

Starcrawler are simply astonishing. Lead singer Arrow de Wilde has such a presence, amazing vocals and is visually incredible. The band behind her is solid and entertaining.

Veteran glam punks Subsonics from Atlanta, GA are on a West Coast tour. We caught them at Thee Stork Club in Oakland with a varied lineup of local bands.

First up were Oakland’s Johnny Maraca and The Marockers, high energy punk, highly entertaining. They have a cassette/digital LP from last year on their Bandcamp.

The Seagulls from San Francisco, fronted by British songwriter Jon Brooder play solid garage punk. They have a new (March 2023) release “This Time Next Year” on Bandcamp.

The penultimate band, Fantasy, are a bit of a mystery. We didn’t catch up with them at the show and we’re not sure if they have an online presence. They were more pop-y punk rock. We will update if we track down more information.

Atlanta, GA’s Subsonics have been around since 1992 and have 8 full-length releases under their belt. Signed to Slovenly Records, they deliver stripped down, minimal rock’n’roll.

Started in 2009 (as Burger Boogaloo) and renamed during the pandemic, Mosswood Meltdown is an annual festival of punk and related music held each 4th of July weekend in Mosswood Park in Oakland, CA The promoters, Total Trash Productions, Marc Ribak and Amy Carver book everything from local garage bands to famous headliners who have included Devo, Bikini Kill, Iggy Pop and The Damned.

This year brought us blazing sunshine and high temperatures, with much of the early arrivers camping out in the shade under trees during the day. This included your correspondent who ran frequently from the photo pit to a convenient tree until things cooled down.

Hot Laundry are friends of ours, so of course we were bitching about how early we had to get out to see them while they sound checked. Bay Area locals, they mix a sixties garage sound with a Detroit girl-group vibe.

Established in 2014, Los Angeles’ hardcore punks Trap Girl came up to NorCal with blistering feminist pink in handcrafted wigs. At one point, they brought on Lynn Breedlove from legendary San Francisco queercore band Tribe 8 for a song.

Wifey is a new project from former professional skater Cher Strauberry, who was formerly in Oakland punk band Twompsax from 2018 to 2023.

Go Sailor were a Lookout Records pop-punk band who released an album and some singles in 1996. The original lineup came back for Mosswood in 2024.

Founded in 1991, Pansy Division have been playing power pop and pop punk with queer themes ever since, touring with bands like Rancid and Green Day and inching towards their target of 1000 shows.

Hunx and his Punx were founded in San Francisco in 2008 playing a mix of bubblegum and punk. The band now includes Shannon Shaw of Shannon & The Clams.

There’s not much more you can say about legendary punks Redd Kross, but they were having such fun up there.

Wrapping up Day One were The B-52s, sounding as good or better than anyone else on the bill

See Instagram galleries of all the bands from Day One below. Day Two is coming soon!

Punk Rock Bowling is the 2nd largest meet-up for Turbojugend, the massive and rather strange organization that grew out of a Turbonegra fan club. If you don’t know them, this fascinating article from Kerrang! from 2018 explain quite well how they came about. or the last 11 or 12 years, the Las Vegas chapter has organized a parallel festival of Turbojuend-related bands at a downtown Las Vegas location.

Your correspondent spoke to the Rev. Dave, founder and organizer of the festival. (pictured with unknown friend) He told me that he gets applications to play from bands all over the world, from many of Turnojugend’s 2300 chapters.

Here we have a sample of the Turbojugend attendees, a fine bunch of individuals.

I photographed a sample of the bands, as PRB weekend is simply crazy and there are too many places to be. Here are San Francisco’s The Creepy Crawlies.

I can’t find this band. Billed on the schedule as ‘Saturday Night Wrist’. If you know them or have any info, please contact the author. They were some excellent, noisy punk.

Fuzz Attack play hard garage punk, and have playing the Bay Area for the last decade.

Flexx Bronco have close ties to the Turbojugend community and play the festival pretty much every year

Twin sisters Béah and Cecilia Romero front Flames of Durga. Their self-titles debut album has been released this year.

We attended the main festival, pool parties and club shows over the next three days, so look for much more content from the official Punk Rock Bowling festivities to come.
