Show Review: Gogol Bordello (Clifton Park, NY – July 22nd)

So on Tuesday July 22nd at Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park, N.Y. I finally had the experience of a Gogol Bordello concert. Finally! I’m not gonna lie, I first heard Gogol Bordello’s music in the movie “Wrist Cutters”. I enjoyed the music so much I immediately looked them up and I was more than happy to find that the music went way beyond the movie. I was an instant fan!! A few years ago they actually played the same venue but I was unable to attend so when I saw that they were coming back I made absolute sure I wouldn’t miss it.

Upstate Concert Hall is one of my favorite locations to see shows around here because the place is not that big so the setting is always rather intimate and it’s also not that small either which attracts some great performances.

Gogol Bordello has become one of my favorite bands and also my most listened to Pandora channel; while listening to their channel I also discovered for myself their supporting act Man Man, which I also dig very much. Man Man is an experimental group from Philly that carries instruments in their arsenal that some of you may never have even heard of, such as; a Litty Fatty, Euphonium, sousaphone and Clavinet. I would recommend that you true music lovers look them up.

As the anticipation for Gogol was building the crowd began to clap in unison. The lights went dark and we could hear strumming coming from Eugene’s acoustic guitar. The fans roared. Eugene came out on the stage first and went into song. The rest of the band came on stage one by one to join in with the front-man. For the first three songs I was in the photography pit and I had the best seats in the house. It’s always a surreal scene when the musicians you admire are performing right in front of you.

G.B. is known for their energetic gypsy punk brand of music and they certainly delivered. Song after song the crowd sang along with the band and even to their newer material. The big crowd pleasers were Wonderlust King, Start Wearing Purple and their 4 song encore which began with my favorite of the night Alcohol. All in all it was truly one of the best shows I’ve seen. Of course I was a little disappointed that they didn’t play American Wedding or Through the Roof but I guess they left me wanting more and that’s not a bad thing. Below you will find dates for the remainder of their Gonzo Turbo Auto Pilot Tour and festival performances, hopefully you can catch a show!
