EP Review: The Flatliners – “Resuscitation of the Year”

If you’re not aware of Canada’s The Flatliners, you’re missing out. They are one of the best punk rock bands to come out of North America in the last fifteen years. 2013’s Dead Language was (in my opinion) a masterpiece, and I always wondered why the record’s opening track “Resuscitation of the Year” wasn’t a single. Well, recently Fat and the band announced they would be releasing it as such, on a 7” which contains a Dead Language B-side on the other side entitled “Fangs.”

If at this point you haven’t heard the song “Resuscitation of the year,” it’s one of the best in the band’s discography and definitely one of the best punk rock songs released in 2013. The song, which is on the A-side of the 7”, is a super fast, upbeat skate punk-ish tune, which is at times very reminiscent of NOFX’s Punk in Drublic. To reiterate what I said before, it’s probably one of the best punk rock songs to come out in the past ten years.

The B-side “Fangs” is more of a hardcore tune, but equally skatey (think bands like Off! or Jealous Again era Black Flag). While it’s definitely a good song (the Flatliners rarely do any wrong), tonally it seems to be completely different than the A-side track, and personally I didn’t think the two songs complemented each other as well as the band or I may have hoped. Where as the first song is a bit faster and poppier, the second is heavier and much darker sounding.

All of that said, I’m going to give this a 4/5. Both songs on the EP were good, and The Flatliners are an amazing band. Huge Flatliners fans will love this, and if you’re a vinyl collector who’s not a fan but is interested, this 7” would be a good place to start.

4/5 Stars
