Let’s give some love to the Danish punk scene. For years, the scene has become more and more noticeable and we have a lot of bands to thank for that. In September ‘19, when I was going through an insomnia-filled three days, I decided to go on a deep dive and that’s when I discovered this band, and that might have been the second best thing to happen to me in that year. But let’s get on with this review. Back in January of 2022, a Danish skate-indie-punk trio called Forever Unclean released their first full-length LP via Nasty Cut Records (EU), Disconnect Disconnect Records (UK), and Hidden Home Records (US), consisting of 11 tracks. If you’re already familiar with Forever Unclean, they are pretty known for their short and one-worded title tracks, which we were introduced to on their EP’s Float, Woof, and Shreds. And that, much to my joy, is still the case with Best.

With Best, I took a different approach than starting from the top with “Dream.” When I first heard the record I decided to put it on “Shuffle” like some daredevil. The first song I heard, was “Kold” sung in the band’s native language Danish, and it became a favorite from the first guitar riff before the vocals come in. While it could fool one and sound uplifting and energetic, the lyrics do put another spin on the song. “Jeg er ligeglad nu”, translated to English “I don’t care right now”.  I’ll admit, speaking Danish myself, I do think it’s nice to see the band dabble in Danish, knowing that it might only be appreciated by their Danish fans. But they took a chance and it definitely paid off.

Next up is Mandy, a cute love note to someone special. “I really need a break from reality with you, with you”, this song is unbelievably catchy from the first verse, and then picks up its pace around the 30-second mark, once again showing off how the three-piece work so well together, from the supporting vocals laying a good background to Lasse’s raw, impressive vocals. This could become a fan favorite in no time. I’ll even go as far as saying, this song should be pushed a lot more; send it to someone you love next Valentine’s Day or Anniversary.

“Smile” is the penultimate song on Best, and opens with Leo’s carefree and rapid drumming. I find this song might be where he shines through, yet the way Lasse and Troels complement the drumming, with their talents on the guitar and bass, gives me at best, ‘90s grunge vibes towards the end, probably why it deserves a mention. While I love punk, getting that hint of grunge from anyone has me hooked when I pick it up.

While I could give a track-by-track review of the record, I believe you need to check it out yourself and not get too influenced by a review. I’ll say this: the record packs punch after punch and you’ll only be glad you heard it. Even from listening to their previous material for three years, it’s very clear how these guys have grown into the band and with each other, the raw emotions transferred in the lyrics, while the instruments play some more uplifting music go with them. Throughout the record, you will are met with short songs, but they pack a lot and there’s no dropping the ball on this record. The trio does know how to properly mash genres, borrowing from the early ‘90s rock, and fast-paced pop-punk, and showing how not all indie music has to be quiet and can take a punch to it. The emotional display that we are met with on the album really benefits the band lyrical-wise, as a few bands before them haven’t been shy of showing a different emotional range on their records. Forever Unclean does it differently, with shorter and more packed songs with lyrics that make you reflect since I could ask them if they were doing a lot of self-reflecting while writing.

From the first listening, I knew this record was going to be on my top ten AoTY List, and I’m glad to say it still is even with all the releases that came this year.

If you want to catch them, they are supporting ALLDEEPENDS and Sewer Cats on selected dates, starting already Friday, November 18th in Copenhagen!

DS Album Review: Bridge The Gap – “Secret Kombinations”

After months of hype and anticipation, Bridge The Gap have some serious expectations to live up to with their debut album Secret Kombinations. After months of hype and anticipation, Bridge The Gap have some serious expectations to live up to with their debut album Secret Kombinations. The 13-song LP was recorded at legendary Fort Collins, CO recording studio The Blasting Room. You may know the producer; I think he’s some drummer guy named Bill Stevenson? No big deal.

Secret Kombinations has all the hallmarks of the 90’s “Epifat” skate punk sound. The album serves up a heaping helping of everything from hard charging, Pennywise-ish sociopolitical anthems, to feel-good melodic punk songs in the vein of bands like No Use For A Name, Pulley, and the slightly more contemporary Chaser. Of course, there’s no shortage of whoas and oozin’ aahs sprinkled throughout the entire album.

The record starts strong with its title track, immediately followed by “Road Less Traveled”, delivering a solid 1-2 punch that grabs you right off the bat. “Over the Target” keeps things moving along at a brisk pace with its riffy guitar work and a driving, whoa-filled chorus. “Open Heart Purgery” and “My Creation” are much slower, but still manage to match the energy of the album’s fastest tracks. I’ve seen plenty of people comparing the latter to Pulley’s classic “Insects Destroy”, and I wholeheartedly agree with the comparison.

The back half of Secret Kombinations is where the band starts to really hit their stride; standout tracks include “Found in a Fire”, “Up”, and “Whippersnapper”. Lyrically, these are some of the album’s most introspecticive, personal songs. There’s a really earnest tone on these tracks that echoes NUFAN’s late-90’s output, somewhere between Making Friends and More Betterness.

This may be the band’s maiden voyage under their current moniker, but these guys are no greenhorns. Bridge The Gap’s lineup is comprised of members of long defunct Salt Lake City punk band Unfold, in which they released an album over 20 years ago. When paired with the warchest of knowledge Bill Stevenson brings to the table, that past experience pays dividends on Secret Kombinations. Bridge The Gap put their spin on the skate punk conventions of yesteryear, and the end result is an ultra-polished record with laser focused musical direction.

Super official review score: 4.25 out of 5 star emojicons ⭐⭐⭐⭐¼

Secret Kombinations releases March 24th on People of Punk Rock Records. Head over here to get the album on vinyl and/or CD. Digital download is available on Bandcamp.

HOOOOOO-LEEEEE SHIIIIIIIIIIT! I’m not sure we’ve been this excited about a Band Spotlight since featuring NYC punks Proper! DC punks, Celebration Summer have only been around since 2019 but you wouldn’t know it by hearing them. They sound like grizzled veterans with expertly constructed music laid behind raw vocals which bellow out relatable and very well written lyrics. Add to that extremely catchy riffs and choruses and these guys make the perfect counter to anyone who says there’s no “good” punk rock these days.

We guess we’re not the only one’s who have noticed their talent, because their debut full length album Patience In Presence is being released via the illustrious A-F Records here in the US and by Shield Recordings abroad. and will be available on September 23rd (pre order here). Great minds think alike! When we asked Lead vocalist/guitarist Nate Falger about the newest single/title track “Patience in Presence” he said: “It provides a glimpse of how I deal with anxiety. The lyrics are a reminder to myself to be present in every moment despite the daily, overwhelming weight I feel on myself.”

If you dig music videos, they’ve also released three of them for tracks off of the upcoming eleven track LP: “Fraud“, “Disconnected” and the aforementioned title track “Patience in Presence“. Give ’em a watch!

Happy Tuesday, comrades!

Dying Scene is super excited to bring you the premiere of yet another killer new track. It’s called “Sold In Bunches,” and it’s the latest single from the upcoming New Junk City album Beg A Promise. Here’s what Atlanta’s finest had to say about the track:

“Sold in Bunches” is actually a reworking of a song from a solo record of mine. We wanted one more song for the record, and were kind of tapped for ideas, when Dakota brought up the possibility of reworking this one. I thought it was a terrible idea, but as usual, he proved me wrong, and it might be my favorite song on the record. I love the horns and strings in the arrangement. They really lift the song and bring a triumphant and cathartic close to the record.

Beg A Promise is due out October 21st on A-F Records. You still have time to pre-order the digital version right here and the vinyl version right here. And If we’re being honest, you really should pre-order it; it’s one of my favorite records of the year and it’s not even out yet!!

DS Gallery: Dynamic Duos Death From Above 1979 & Teen Mortgage Electrify Stage Together (Metro, Chicago, 11/7/24)

This year Chicago has had a powerhouse of concerts; OFF!’s farewell show, the Jigsaw Youth/Bob Vylan combo and Knocked Loose, just to name a few. Adding to the list is the absolutely magnetic combination of garage punkers Teen Mortgage and noise-dance-punk legends Death From Above 1979 at Chicago’s Metro.

Teen Mortgage is the two-piece garage-punk band from Washington, DC that is quickly rising the ranks through the punk scene with guitarist and vocalist James Guile and drummer Edward Barakauskas.

We covered them last time from their headlining show at HI-FI Indy in Indianapolis on April 1st this year. Since then, they have released a live Audiotree album on May 22nd and new single “Burn No Bridges” via King Pizza Records on September 20th.

They also kept busy touring the UK with The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer, played music festivals Louder Than Life, Aftershock and Levitation, and more recently played some US dates with another favorite band of mine, Destroy Boys. Teen Mortgage immediately jumped from the Destroy Boys tour to the You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine 20th anniversary tour with Death From Above 1979.

Both bands being two-piece acts, noisy, with tons of distortion and face paced riffs, the Teen Mortgage/DFA1979 combo is pure raw perfection.

While Teen Mortgage is finishing up some remaining Canada dates, next year they already have some big plans: playing Germany’s Rock am Ring, UK’s Download Festival, and a stop in Dublin with Weezer.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Death From Above 1979 is a unique combination of Jesse F. Keeler on bass and keyboards and Sebastien Grainger on drums and lead vocals. In 2004 they released their debut album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine and have been touring extensively this year for its 20th anniversary.

The first time I saw DFA1979 I was in complete awe of the stage productions, particularly the lights, and this show was no different. Beams of different colored lights shot through heavy fog in different directions, perfectly choreographed to every song.

With their abrasive synth and piercing screams, DFA1979 is an exemplary example of what dance punk is meant to be.

This sold-out show at Metro was part of their USA/Canada Part II tour with Teen Mortgage; Part III will begin in 2025 with San Francisco punk band Spiritual Cramp (remember them at Riot Fest this year? We do!) followed by a stint in Australia with DZ Deathrays.
