Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by our friends at Punk Rock Radar:

Frequent flyers here on the Record Radar, Fat Wreck gets us started this week with not one, but two new 25th Anniversary reissues. Up first is the Honest Don’s Greatest Shits compilation. There are three variants of this one that I know of so far; a beautiful green/brown/gold splatter, a red splatter, and gold (not available to buy but thrown in with randomly selected orders). And as I’m writing this I’ve realized this shit already sold out. Womp womp.

Also from Fat: a 25th Anniversary reissue of the Mad CaddiesDuck and Cover, the first new (colored) pressing of this record since 2011. This one’s still in stock! Get it here before that’s no longer the case. Also lookout for the Caddies’ new record coming soon on SBÄM Records.

Bay Area punk band Tess & The Details’ debut album Runaway is out now on Double Helix Records. This one’s available on three beautiful color variants, all of which are housed in a gatefold sleeve. Check out the title track below and grab the record here.

Dischord Records is releasing a new Minor Threat 7” on December 1st to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Out of Step EP. The Out of Step Outtakes 7” features recently unearthed recordings from the original studio session in 1983. Get it on clear vinyl here.

Green Day‘s new record Saviors is now available on 19(!) unique variants, as a new “Bluejay Marble” color variant has gone up on their webstore. We are continuing to monitor this developing situation on this post dedicated to the many vinyl color variants of Green Day’s new album Saviors.

Your favorite Dying Scene editor JayStone‘s 4th favorite(?) solo artist Sam Russo has a new Christmas 7” out now on Red Scare. Listen to the two songs from Mistletoe Pier below and get the rekkid here.

What’s up with all the 7″s this week? Here’s another one from The Flatliners. It’s somehow been 10 years since Dead Language came out, and to celebrate the good Canadian boys are releasing a 7” with two acoustic versions of songs from the album. Listen to stripped down recordings of “Quitters” and “Bury Me” below, and grab the Dead Decade 7” here.

If you’re a dedicated reader of the Record Radar (I trust that all of you are), you’re already aware of this 20th Anniversary reissue of Rancid‘s Indestructible. After all, we did tell you about it over a month ago… and again a week later when another variant was revealed. Now the band has officially announced the reissue and revealed a pretty slick red/black webstore exclusive color variant. While I have your attention, I’d like to remind you this album is home to one of the all-time worst Rancid songs:

Earlier this week we had the pleasure of spilling the beans on the new Ramonescore Brigade Vol 3 comp from Mom’s Basement, Council Pop & Insipid Records. This vinyl-only comp features songs from the McRackins, The Putz, Mark Murphy & the Meds and a bunch of other great bands. The color variants look awesome, too.

PRE-ORDER LINKS:

Dying Scene editor JayStone’s 17th favorite punk frontman-turned-solo artist Chuck Ragan released a bunch of songs a long time ago (is 16 years a long time?) that were only available as a subscription based 7” series (and a CD). Now End Hits Records is bringing these songs to the masses with the Blueprint Sessions 2xLP. There are a bunch of color variants available here (US), here (Canada, exclusive screen printed cover variant(!!)), and here (UK).

Kill from the Heart, the 1983 debut album by the very eloquently named Dicks, is getting a 40th anniversary reissue on translucent red colored vinyl. This one’s been out of print since 2012, grab a copy from Superior Viaduct.

Los Angeles ska-punks Matamoska!’s 2014 album M is for Murder has gotten its first-ever vinyl release, courtesy of Asbestos Records. The 10th Anniversary reissue on bloody red vinyl has been remixed and remastered; get your copy here.

Dine Alone Records just reissued literally every Gob album a few months ago, but they’ve announced another pressing of Foot In Mouth Disease for the album’s 20th birthday. This one’s limited to 750 copies on a red/white split colored LP and includes a bonus 7”. It goes on sale in store and online on Black Friday.

Speaking of Black Friday, the sales have already started and that includes deals on vinyl! Epitaph has a bunch of records marked down 25% on their webstore, including their recent NOFX, ALL & Pennywise reissues. I’m sure more labels/stores have sales going but I’m too fucking lazy to hunt them all down. r/vinyldeals is a good place to keep track of who’s got sales going.

Well, that’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave us a comment below, or send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next week!

DS Record Radar: This Week in Punk Vinyl (Pulley, 30footfall, Mustard Plug, Nancy Vandal & More!)

Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time and this week’s Record Radar is, once again, fucking yuuuuuuge. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by our friends at Punk Rock Radar:

Two Pulley EPs are back in print, thanks to SBÄM and Double Helix Records. Time-Insensitive Material and The Long and Short of It are being reissued, each limited to 300 copies on three different color variants. You may recall these were just repackaged as part of the Encore 2xLP a few years ago, but this is the first time in over a decade either of these has been reissued as a standalone release. If you’re in the US, you can grab your copies here; if you’re in Europe, you’ll want to go here. These should start shipping in late April.

Another Record Radar, another sold out Fat Wreck release. Perhaps I should start doing those one-off Record Radar posts if a big release is announced in the middle of the week? Anyway! It’s NOFX. It’s The Decline. It’s the 25th Anniversary reissue. It’s sold out. Womp womp.

30footfall! They’ve got a new EP coming out later this month on People of Punk Rock Records. It’s their first new record in like a bagillion years! The 12″ EP titled National Treasure …And Other LaForgeries features 6 songs that were in the works before 30footfall guitarist Chris Laforge unfortunately passed in 2017. Pre-order the record here.

People of Punk Rock Records have a few more awesome new releases you should add to your cart while you’re grabbing that 30footfall record. Exhibit A: Montreal skate punk band Down Memory Lane‘s new Breathing Space LP. If you’re a fan of all things fast, melodic & awesome, don’t sleep on this. Shit’s a banger. Buy the record and while yer at it buy their last one, too.

Exhibit B: Hurry Up and Wait, the new album from Toronto melodic punk band Wasting Time. This one’s due out on April 12th and (spoiler alert) your friends at Dying Scene are exclusively premiering the album’s lead single tomorrow! Yes, that’s right. 9am eastern standard time, be there or be square. Also, pre-order the record!

Last week (I guess it was two weeks ago technically), I told you about a bunch of Aquabats reissues. Well there’s more Aquabats on tap this week because they announced their new album Finally!. Pre-orders are available here. You can get the double LP for $39.99, or if you’re a fucking idiot you can pay $119.99 for an autographed copy. LMAO

The Adolescents have a new 2xLP live record due out May 17th on Concrete Jungle Records. As its title suggests, The Rob Ritter Tapes – Live At Starwood 1980/1981 is a collection of recently unearthed recordings from Adolescents shows at Hollywood’s Starwood Nightclub in the early 80’s. For 32 euros* (plus value-added tax and shipping), you get two – count ’em, two – 180g LPs on red and blue wax AND two CDs! It’s an unbeatable value, folks. Pre-order the record here.

Let’s talk some ska, shall we? Albany three piece Girth Conrol‘s new record Life’s Too Short For Girth Control is the first of five(!) ska records I’m boutta tell you about. These guys are awesome, this record’s awesome. It’s out now. You should listen to it. You should buy it.

Less Than Jake and Bowling For Soup just toured the UK together and released a 7″ where they cover one of each other’s songs. LTJ does “High School Never Ends”, BFS does “The Science of Selling Yourself Short”. SBAM Records has this up for pre-order, only on their EU store for some reason. People of Punk Rock Records has some copies on their store for the North American crowd. Limited to 125 copies on Pink Splatter & 125 copies on Clear Splatter colored wax.

22 years after its original release Mustard Plug‘s Yellow #5 is finally getting a reissue. There are two variants for this one; the Smartpunk Exclusive Purple w/ Yellow & White Splatter is limited to 200 hand numbered copies, and Hopeless Records doesn’t say how many copies they pressed of the White w/ Purple & Green Splatter variant. Links to all the places you can buy are here.

Orange County (California, not Florida) ska band Half Past Two has signed to Bad Time Records for the release of their new album Talk is Killing Me, which is due out on April 19th. Check out the lead single below and pre-order the record here.

And last up in the ska segment of this week’s Record Radar we have The Kilograms, a new band with an all star lineup including Joe Gittleman of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sammy Kay, former Bouncing Souls Drummer Michael Mcdermott & J Duckworth from Newport Secret Six. The first pressing of their self-titled debut EP sold out almost instantly a few weeks ago, but the good news is Asbestos Records has already issued a second pressing of 300 copies on “Olive Drab” colored vinyl. Listen to the EP below and grab the 12″ here.

Bayside has a new album coming out on May 10th. It’s called There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive and so far three variants have been announced. The Smartpunk Exclusive clear(?) variant was limited to 300 copies and is already sold out, the splatter variant is sold out on Hopeless Records‘ US store but is still in stock on the EU store, and the translucent purple retail variant is in stock everywhere.

TSOL‘s new album A-Side Graffiti is out now on Kitten Robot Records. It features a mix of new original songs and covers. Check out my favorite song off the record below and get it on “colored vinyl” here (they don’t specify the color on the label’s store, but Rough Trade has it listed as “Red/White/Blue Blended”).

A few weeks ago we premiered the first of many tracks from our friends at Coffin Curse Records‘ upcoming NOFX tribute album I Heard They Broke Up!!. Since then, the 3xLP comp featuring 62(!) NOFX covers went up for pre-order and that shit is already soul doubt! If you missed out that sucks, but you can still get it on CD and hey, maybe there will be a 2nd pressing? Perchance.

Speaking of awesome shit we’ve done premieres for recently, let’s talk about Middle-Out! These guys are from Detroit and they kick fuckin’ ass. They’ve got a new record coming May 24th on Punkerton Records and it, too, is going to kick fuckin’ ass. Check out the latest single below and pre-order the LP on one of five variants (or just buy all five, why not?) by clicking this hyperlink.

The friendly people at Thousand Islands Records are flexing their might with a new label sampler comp! The Sauce Vol. 1 features 17 tracks from great bands like Belvedere, Chaser (they’ve got a new album on the way, too – that shit’s gonna be awesome), Straightline, Counterpunch & more. You can get it on green and/or purple colored wax here.

28 years after its original release on compact disc (otherwise known as CD by those not in the trade), Aussie punk veterans Nancy Vandal‘s 1996 album The Debriefing Room is getting its first-ever vinyl release thanks to Endless Detention Records. Limited to 200 copies on “Oh Yes, You’re Beautiful Splatter” (Purple w/ Green Splatter) and 50 copies on “Gladiator Green” (Translucent Green) colored vinyl. These are selling fast; get your copy here. Fun fact: Jay from Frenzal Rhomb was in the band and is on this record. It’s a great record!

Ceremony’s Rohnert Park LP gets its 10th pressing from Bridge Nine Records, with four new color variants. These are what they are, how many there are, and where you can get them:

– Red/White/Blue vinyl (300 copies, only available at Hollywood Palladium show on 2/29/24)
– Orange vinyl (300, Hard Times)
– Yellow vinyl (500, Revelation Records)
– Pink vinyl (1000, Bridge Nine store)

Cock Sparrer announced their new album Hand on Heart will be released on April 5th. Pirates Press Records (US) has some exclusive color variants up on their store, some of which have already sold out. Cherry Red Records (UK) has an exclusive variant of their own on red & black splatter, which also has alternate cover art – you can get that right here. Both labels have a picture disc as well, but why would you want that?

And last up this week, keeping it in the UK, we’ve got Snuff! Their new album Off on the Charabanc is due out March 22nd (or maybe it’s April 5th, I’m seeing both dates listed in different places) on SBAM Records. Two variants will be available to pre-order from the band’s webstore very soon – Red/Black and Grey/Black Marble. Three tracks are already streaming on YouTube as well, though I haven’t seen any mention of it on the band/label’s social media:

To wrap things up, I wanna give a quick shoutout to Planet Retro Records, a local record store I’d probably frequent if I wasn’t too fucking lazy to make the 30 minute intra-county pilgrimage from Clearwater to St. Petersburg, Florida. I stopped in this weekend and they’ve got all kinds of awesome shit – the “punk section” takes up half the store! I picked up one of my favorite Honest Don’s Records releases, Big In Japan’s Destroy the New Rock, for $9! Also Dead To Me’s Moscow Penny Ante, another record I’d been hunting for a while, for $18! I also scored a copy of Glue Gun’s The Scene is Not for Sale, an “import” (wink wink nudge nudge) copy of AFI’s Crash Love, and records from some St. Pete locals in No Loves and Awkward Age. If you find yourself in Pinellas County and you’re a punk record collector, be sure to hit up Planet Retro.

Until next time…

Dying Scene Revisits: Ten of Fat Wreck Chords’ Most Overlooked Releases

Few names loom larger in punk rock lore than Fat Wreck Chords. Started in 1990 by NOFX frontman “Fat” Mike Burkett, the label has stood tall as a bastion of independent punk music for over 30 years. Few names loom larger in punk rock lore than Fat Wreck Chords. Started in 1990 by NOFX frontman “Fat” Mike Burkett, the label has stood tall as a bastion of independent punk music for over 30 years. Fat has been home to countless great bands; No Use For A Name, Lagwagon, Strung Out, Good Riddance… the list goes on. If you’re like me, a good chunk of your record collection is stamped with their iconic logo, like a punk rock Nintendo Seal of Quality. Today, we’ll be discussing some of the less heralded entries in the label’s extensive catalog. Come along for a magical journey as we dive into Fat Wreck’s most overlooked releases.

Zero Down – With a Lifetime to Pay

The name Jim Cherry is synonymous with Fat Wreck Chords for me. In addition to being a bass virtuoso, the man was one hell of a songwriter. He played an integral role in Strung Out’s success, with writing credits on classics like “Bring Out Your Dead”, “Firecracker”, and “Mind of My Own”, just to name a few. Then, of course, there’s his contributions to Pulley. Prior to his untimely passing, Cherry started a new band called Zero Down. Their lone album With a Lifetime to Pay is criminally underrated. This is essential listening for all skate punk fans. Zero skippable tracks on this one.

The Loved Ones – Build and Burn

Alright, this one might be a somewhat controversial pick; not because this is a bad album or anything, but I think Keep Your Heart is generally considered The Loved Ones‘ “best” record. But you know what? I don’t give a fuck, I think Build and Burn is better. I couldn’t get enough of this album when it came out. Many regard the mid to late 2000’s as Fat’s “lean years”, but they put out a lot of good shit that didn’t have the typical “Fat sound” during this period. There isn’t a bad song to be found on Build and Burn. The first three tracks alone are worth the price of admission. Everything else is icing on this Philly pop-punk cake.

Limp – Guitarded

Limp was a pretty short lived pop-punk band that released three records through Fat Wreck imprint Honest Don’s Records. Music critic types lazily painted these guys into a corner as a Green Day or Blink-182 imitation. I personally don’t think Limp sounds anything like either of those bands. Their sophomore effort Guitarded is a mostly midtempo pop-punk record with a little ska sprinkled on top. More than anything else, this album is melodic to a fault. “Decision”, “Ten Minutes”, and “Entertainer” are my favorite songs.

Cobra Skulls – Bringing the War Home

Now, I already know what you’re thinking: “Really dude, you’re including a fuckin’ EP in this list?”. Yes, yes I am. Cobra Skulls released two killer albums on Red Scare and were quickly snatched up by Fat Wreck. They made their Fat debut with 2011’s Bringing the War Home and immediately went out on tour with NOFX and the Bouncing Souls (yours truly saw them in Orlando). For many (myself included), this was their introduction to Cobra Skulls, and the band capitalized on that opportunity in a big way. Bringing the War Home provides the perfect bite sized snapshot of a band that was firing on all cylinders. The Bad Religion cover is pretty good, too.

Only Crime – Virulence

Fat Mike and Floyd used to host a podcast where they played songs off the label’s new releases at the time. I was introduced to Only Crime for the first time when they played “Eyes of the World” off their record Virulence. I was blown away, and instantly ordered the CD. Only Crime is one of the greatest punk “super groups” ever as far as I’m concerned. You’ve got Russ Rankin on vocals and Bill Stevenson absolutely killing it on drums, that’s all you need to know. This whole record kicks ass.

American Steel – Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts

A cornerstone of the Lookout! Records roster in the late 90’s, American Steel made a strong impression with the chaotic energy of their 1999 LP Rouge’s March. Over time, the East Bay punk band’s sound mellowed out quite a bit, culminating in 2009’s Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts. This record is full of great midtempo punk-ish rock songs with big choruses that invite you to sing along – the album opener “Emergency House Party” being a prime example. Other highlights include “Your Ass Ain’t Laughing Now”, “Bergamot”, and “Meals and Entertainment”. This isn’t the best American Steel’s discography has to offer, but it’s a fun listen nonetheless.

Big in Japan – Destroy the New Rock

Hailing from Reno, Nevada and featuring members of Zoinks! and The Gain, Big in Japan made their debut in 2001 with Destroy the New Rock. This power-pop punk gem is buried deep in the Honest Don’s catalog, which sucks because it is fantastic! The songs are catchy and the production is stellar, but that’s no surprise considering this was recorded with Mass Giorgini at Sonic Iguana. This record sounds like a mix of Squirtgun and Green Day. Highly recommended listening.

Swingin’ Utters – Here, Under Protest

Call it a comeback! After going eight years without releasing a new record, Fat mainstays Swingin’ Utters made their triumphant return in 2011 with Here, Under Protest. They had a new guitarist in Jack Dalrymple (One Man Army, Dead to Me), and a slightly more polished, melodic approach. Singer Johnny Peebucks’ voice lent itself nicely to the band’s renewed sound. Standout tracks include “Brand New Lungs”, “Kick it Over”, “Heavy Head”, and the album closer “Effortless Amnesiac”, on which Dalrymple takes the lead on vocals.

Love Equals Death – Nightmerica

If you’re a fan of anything AFI did before Sing the Sorrow, you will probably like Love Equals Death‘s Nightmerica. I won’t say frontman Chon Travis sounds exactly like Davey Havok, but at certain points on this album the resemblance is almost uncanny. “Bombs over Brooklyn”, “When We Fall”, “Voice of Change”, and “Numb” offer up a high energy blend of AFI and Pennywise. “Pray for Me” is a kinda corny, on-the-nose love song but in a charming way. “The Broadcast” is complete with all the George Dubya soundbites you’d expect from a mid 2000’s punk song. This whole album holds a special place in my heart, but “Sonora” is by far my favorite track on Nightmerica.

Teen Idols – Full Leather Jacket

The undisputed champions of Ramonescore, Teen Idols mastered their formula and stuck to it. Of their three albums on Honest Don’s, Full Leather Jacket is the one I find myself returning to most often. This is a quintessential pop-punk record. Absolutely zero duds to be found here, every song is great. And with Mass Giorgini at the controls you know the production is top notch. Big shoutout to whoever sequenced this album; “The Team” is a perfect closing track.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk! I’m certain I pissed at least a few of you off for one reason or another. But hey, that’s to be expected when treading on sacred ground. If I introduced you to an album you’ve never listened to, or just gave you the little nudge you needed to check out something you passed on when it first came out, then I’d say my mission has been accomplished. Fat Wreck Chords has been a big part of my life for a long time now. They’ve introduced me to some of my favorite bands and records, and I’m sure a lot of you can say the same. Here’s to another 30 years of awesome music!

If you think we’re fucking idiots because your favorite record isn’t on this list, feel free to let us know in the comments. Maybe we’ll include it in Part 2! 😘

  1. Diesel Boy’s Cock Rock. they used to play “Titty Twister” sporadically on an old college Station. Great Album all the way through with “Saving the World” as the other stand out single.

Teen Idols

The Teen Idols were a pop-punk band originally from Nashville, Tennessee.
