DS Exclusive: Colin Clive (Mustard Plug) talks 1500 shows and being the most badass ska band on the planet

Mustard Plug has been rocking the ska-punk scene for longer than many of you readers have been alive.  This year the band will celebrate their 20th anniversary and to put it all in perspective the group’s vocalist/guitarist, Colin Clive, took some time to answer a few of our questions.

Check out what Colin had to say regarding Mustard Plug reaching the 1500 show milestone, band names, touring, future Mustard Plug plans and who he thinks the 2nd most badass ska band on the planet would be right here.

You celebrated your 1500th show this week. Describe your feelings towards that.

It’s pretty weird. At first when I found out we were approaching 1500 shows I was pretty shocked. It seemed like a lot of shows! It was also pretty crazy that it didn’t seem like that many to me. Then unfortunately I saw Bon Jovi on the Today show and they said they’ve played around 2,600 shows. I didn’t feel so hot then. They did start in ’83 though so they’ve got 8 years on us.

What’s the single craziest show moment you’ve ever had?

My day to day schedule is so crazy I have a hard time remembering what I did yesterday, or my age, or what I did 10 minutes ago. Haha. I have no recollection of any of our past shows. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t seem like 1500+!

If you could change your band name now, would you, and to what?

Brilliant! Yes, but i have no idea what to. Actually maybe not. We’ve been lucky to have never run into another Mustard Plug and had any legal issues with the name. I do know that in this day and age coming up with a band name might be one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do. I wish it on no one. Back in 1991 it was a much simpler time.

What is a good positive experience that you’ve had with another band while touring?

I think I’ve really enjoyed touring with most every band we ever have. We’re pretty easy going guys and generally just like hanging out, having some beverages and having fun. Parties are always more fun with more people. It’s not always that much fun to party by yourself.

Who are your favorite current ska bands?

I didn’t know there were any left?

If you could tour with any band in the world, ska or not, who would it be?

Uh, right today I’d love it if Hepcat would tour again!! We had a lot of fun with them!! Outside of that I’ll say SNFU, The Toy Dolls, Descendents, The Dickies, Chixdiggit!, Superchunk and Teenage Bottlerocket. I could see all those bands everyday!!

When can we expect a new Mustard Plug release?

You can always expect one! When you’ll get one is another story!

In 2002 you were banned from the Vans Warped Tour, making you officially the most badass band in ska music today. Who’s the second most badass?

Mu330 cause they had Rob Bell and Gerry Lundquist as horn players. Oh Yeah!!!

Any closing remarks?

Sorry it took me a month to answer 9 questions. That’s what you get for asking me to do stuff during the Holidays!! I’m a busy fella!! haha!! Thanks for the interview. I actually did enjoy doing it.
