Russian feminist punks Pussy Riot being held in prison

Three members of the riot grrrl-inspired Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot are being held in prison and awaiting trial, following a hearing on Thursday. The band members were arrested in connection to their “punk prayer” protest against Vladimir Putin, which occurred in February at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.

Two of the detained musicians have small children, and a judge denied the trio’s request for release on bail. The detention has been extended until June 24.

There have been protests in Moscow as well as worldwide charging that the punishment against the women (for charges of “hooliganism”) are excessive. Police arrested about 20 outside the Moscow courthouse today, but they have since been released. One band member’s husband said, “This prosecution was clearly ordered by Vladimir Putin because he felt personally insulted. I believe no punishment at all was necessary.”

If you’re interested in getting involved with the Pussy Riot solidarity movement, there is a Facebook event with information as well as a Free Pussy Riot website with details about global action.
