Here’s a fun surprise to get your weekend started. Longtime friend of the Scene Sammy Kay has announced plans for a new full-length solo record. Due out later this summer on Sell The Heart Records, the project is titled July 1960, and as you might imagine, it’s an immensely personal listen. Here’s how Kay himself describes it:
It’s been a wild ride. I showed up to the Midwest about 2 and a half years ago to figure it out. I needed to relearn who I was, who I am, and who I wanted to be.
I can speak in tounge all day, but I’m gonna be as transparent as possible.
I wrote this record coming out of a divorce, a month long relapse and finally understanding what my mental health was, and learning to deal with the day to day. This record was written from my point of view, based on the dumb things my friends said around me here and on the road. No characters, no daydreams, just me.
I got linked with Sell The Heart a few months ago, and Andy and I hit it off and we got the ball rolling, and now we’re here.
July 1960 centers around Kay on vocals and acoustic guitar with support from the multi-talented John Calvin Abney (pedal steel, electric guitar, mellotron, harmonica, piano), Cory Tramontelli on upright bass and Collin Thompson on trombone. There are a variety of different pre-order options available at Sammy’s bandcamp page, or over at Sell The Heart. Get on them, and check out “How Fast to Run” below, and stay tuned for more on this one as we get closer to release date.
