Interview: Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) discusses the band’s upcoming album trilogy; secret free show in Burbank cancelled

In a recent interview, Green Day frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, discussed the band’s upcoming album trilogy, !Uno!, !Dos!, !Tre! and described it as being “more power pop – somewhere between AC/DC and the early Beatles.”

Check out a quote from the interview:
“What did you think Green Day needed to do next, after American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown? You couldn’t do a third punk opera in a row. People ask me all the time. Even my son asked me, “Dad, would you ever go back to playing songs like from [1994’s] Dookie and [1992’s] Kerplunk?” I love those records. I love the punk stuff I grew up on. But there are so many bands who make the mistake – “We’re going back, old-school.” Well, that’s all you’re doing. You already did it. So we’re changing the guitar sound. We’re not going with the big Marshall-amp thing. We wanted something punchier, more power pop – somewhere between AC/DC and the early Beatles.”

In other news: a secret free show the band was planning to play this Friday in Burbank, California was cancelled when the band was denied access to the necessary permits from the city. Officials feared crowd control would be an issue due to the expectation of thousands of fans showing up.

The first album in the trilogy, ¡Uno! arrives on September 25th, while ¡Dos! arrives on November 13th and ¡Tré! arrives on January 15th of next year. Their most recent studio album, 21st Century Breakdown, came out in 2009.
