Strike Anywhere frontman, Thomas Barnett recently did an interview for the French site Goeland-TV. The beginning is all about politics but it starts to get REALLY interesting around minute 6 when Thomas talks about his band’s time on Fat Wreck Chords, why they decided to move to Bridge Nine and, most interesting, about his opinions on Fat Mike and his recent controversial shenanigans.
“I don’t really identify very much maybe with what’s happening right now with Fat Mike and celebrity and the glorification of drugs and that kind of behavior. I know what his intention is. His intention is to be a shock value punk rocker screaming at the American Christian Right from the highest stage he can saying sex, drugs, and rock and roll are ok – and they are… And trying to say all the homophobia and sexism of American mainstream culture needs to be confronted. I just don’t know if things like Cokie The Clown really do that job… The way that Fat Mike is presenting himself right now is nothing that we necessarily want to be that close to…”
That’s a summarized semi-accurate transcription of some of the interesting quotes from the interview, but it should be noted that I’m a bad typer and maybe a worse listener so you should really check out the full video here. No matter where you stand on the issue, it is definitely interesting to hear Thomas’s perspective on Fat Mike’s controversial SXSW show, especially so soon after Fat Mike’s did his own interview about his “performance”.
Strike Anywhere is currently supporting their latest album, Iron Front on Bridge Nine Records. They will be headed out on tour soon so be sure to check out their Dying Scene Shows page for more information.
