Monster music festival SXSW in Austin (featuring more than a few big-name punk bands) wrapped up this past weekend, during which the event caused considerable controversy regarding a trial run by the corporation BBH Labs. The program, titled “Homeless Hotspots,” involved laborers (many of which fell into the low-income or homeless labels) to carry 4G hotspot packs on themselves, requesting a $2 donation in exchange for 15 minutes of internet usage. If successful, a similar program would be implemented in New York City.
The trial received harsh backlash, with critics arguing that such a low-paying operation is a clear exploitation of lower-class citizens and an overall demeaning practice. Health concerns were also raised.
One of the loudest critics of the program is The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, whose take on the issue can be watched here.
BBH Labs has since announced that the program will not be continued.
