In a recent press release Blink 182 co-vocalist and Angels & Airwaves frontman Tom DeLonge discusses the reasons why he decided to forgo the help of a major label for the release of Angels & Airwaves upcoming album Love, instead opting to give away the album for free. You can read the whole announcement here, but to summarize: Tom has shelled out over $500 G’s of his own money to fund the project, which he plans to release for free in hopes of significantly broadening the band’s reach.
“If only 5 percent of that 20 million came back and interacted with the Modlife platform that powers our Web site, the revenue would far exceed anything we’d make from a major label, in any way, shape or form,” DeLonge says. “I believe that music would be like a business card that you pass out, and if people like it, they come back and buy a number of things from your band.”
Love is slated for release on February 14th.
Editors Note: It is a scientific fact that covering punk news while simultaneously watching The Jersey Shore re-runs will equal one horribly written post and 45 minutes of extreme unproductiveness.
