Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has revealed, via an update on his website, that he was recently hospitalized after his liver and kidney started to fail as a result of irresponsible drinking. Here’s his official statement:
“hey everyone, it’s deryck here. sorry i’ve been so m.i.a. lately, but i’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital. the reason i got so sick is from all the hard boozing i’ve been doing over the years. it finally caught up to me. i was drinking hard every day. until one night. i was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around mid night and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden i didn’t feel so good. i then collapsed to the ground unconscious. my fiancé got me rushed to the hospital where they put me into the intensive care unit. i was stuck with needles and i.v.’s all over. i was completely sedated the FIRST WEEK. when i finally woke up the next day i had no idea where i was. my mum and step dad were standing over me. i was so freaked out. my liver and kidney’s collapsed on me. needless to say it scared me straight. i finally realized i can’t drink anymore. if i have one drink the doc’s say i will die. i’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. i didn’t, and look where that got me. (i never thought i would ever say that! haha) anyway i have my passion and inspiration back for writing music. i already have a few song ideas for new songs. soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again. see you all sometime! there will be more posts again so s[t]ay up to date friends.”
At least it sounds like he’s come to terms with having to change his lifestyle. Good luck on the rest of your recovery, Deryck!
Sum 41 released their last album Screaming Bloody Murder on Island Records in 2011. Whenever a new album is released, it will be the band’s first album without long-time drummer, Stevo, who left in April 2013.
Add Sum 41 to My Radar

this is sad, it’s terrible that he ended up at this point, what’s even sadder is the amount of fuckwits that sit behind keyboards mocking someone in this position, I guess it actually speaks volumes about your character because the truth is you would probably never speak so harshly of someone face to face, or maybe you would.. either way it’s pathetic that people are so desensitized to emotion

Sounds like he almost became a casualty of society
Do people even alcohol anymore? I didn’t know…
Why is this news? Shit band! It’s amazing there still writing shit music. He should take this as a lesson and be done! Casualty of society is what he is lol it’s sad it happened, but there’s people all over the world that drink themselves to death. I see no news headline for them. Why one for this idiot? I do believe he was in too deep!
That’s good for him may he get well soon hope he stay clean
Never confuse sum41 with NoFx
You shit talkers are so “punk”. Big behind the keyboard. Pussies.
Sounds like he got In Too Deep
Oh , that rock star lifestyle , tisk, tisk ….
Read his statement. Priceless
Why are people crying that this is not news? This isn’t exactly a world news sight!
I bet all the people who are talking shit didn’t say that when Bradley od’d or Kurt ate a shot gun. Not that he’s musically on that level, but I bet you didn’t say “oh fuck that guy for overdosing on heroin.”
Speaking as a punk in his thirties, I’ve known a few people that aren’t around anymore because of alcohol abuse. This isn’t just a problem with the rock star lifestyle. It’s a problem, period. Good for him (even with his music that murders my ear holes) for coming out and saying this. Some of the people commenting need to think about somebody they know who needs a wake up call, rather than just being a dick for being a dicks sake.
Hasn’t he got the right to talk about the dangers of alcohol abuse regardless of his musical style and status? If it’s good enough for all those straight edge bands to fucking preach surely he has the right to comment on his own experience. Doesn’t sound like he is forcing anyone to quit booze or judging anyone who drinks. Whether his band is good or not is irrelevant.
Damn man that’s heavy.
Maybe he crashed his own house party that no one else came too
Lol
Get well!!
