Bad Religion, The Offspring and Rancid albums listed among Guitar World’s Best Guitar Albums of 1994

Remember this article from two weeks ago that The Offspring and Bad Religion‘s albums cracked the top 5 in Guitar World magazine’s Best Guitar Albums of 1992 list? Well, they just published the final results of what was the “Best Guitar Album” of 1994, and I gotta admit, they are more surprising but interesting than […]

Remember this article from two weeks ago that The Offspring and Bad Religion‘s albums cracked the top 5 in Guitar World magazine’s Best Guitar Albums of 1992 list? Well, they just published the final results of what was the “Best Guitar Album” of 1994, and I gotta admit, they are more surprising but interesting than the 1992 list.

As you might expect given that it was Guitar World running the poll, the final list features not just metal or alternative albums, but three punk rock albums joined the ranks and one of them made an unexpected #1, and that’s… Bad Religion’s Stranger Than Fiction! The Offspring’s Smash came in second, while Rancid’s Let’s Go hit #8. Congratulations to all those bands. You can click here to view the rest of the list, or click through here to read the article in its entirety.

How do you think GW readers did? We think they may have left a few off. If you think there’s at least one best “guitar album” from 1994 that could have made it on the list, throw in your comments here. [Read more…]

Random Cover Songs: The best versions of “I Fought The Law”

Random Cover Songs: The best versions of “I Fought The Law”

If you’re a Dying Scene reader the chances are high that you’ve attended at least one punk show in your life. Been there, done that? Then the chances are even higher that you’ve heard one of the many seemingly millions of covers of the Bobby Fuller Four 1960’s rock hit “I Fought The Law.” Compiled […]

If you’re a Dying Scene reader the chances are high that you’ve attended at least one punk show in your life. Been there, done that? Then the chances are even higher that you’ve heard one of the many seemingly millions of covers of the Bobby Fuller Four 1960’s rock hit “I Fought The Law.”

Compiled here are, in our opinion, the best covers of this tune, along with an explanation of what makes each stand out. Through a multitude of bands, the 50-year old anthem has been blasted over the radio, played in all sorts of protest movements, and used by the U.S. Military to taunt enemies (yes, you read that correctly). Head over here to see our list. You can head to the song’s Wikipedia page for a more extensive list of covers. [Read more…]

Nothington has announced that they’re calling it good after this year. The band made the announcement on their Facebook page this morning.

The split appears to be amicable, with the announcement stating that came to the decision “simply because we have other musical, artistic, and career-related aspirations to pursue as individuals.”

This year will be the band’s final appearances at The Fest and Punk Rock Bowling. They will be playing their last tours in the second half of 2018 with “a few select dates leading into spring of 2019.”

You can find the full announcement below.

The band’s most recent album, “In the End” was released April 2017 and was one of my top albums of the year. You should definitely try to catch them if they tour near you before the split. I haven’t caught them since a 2007 or so basement show with Off With Their Heads in Minneapolis, and it was easily one of the best shows I’ve been to.

Despite the sting of probably not getting any more material from Nothington, I am definitely looking forward to any projects that will come out of the split. [Read more…]

Well this sucks. It was just confirmed that Close Your Eyes vocalist Shane Raymond has just left the band, apparently due to health reasons. A statement from the band can be read below:

Recently, there have been many rumors and assumptions about us due to our cancellation of the Symptoms & Cures tour. We regret having to cancel but it was something we needed to do for personal reasons. We appreciate the patience and support from all of our fans. Unfortunately, we have to confirm that Shane will be leaving Close Your Eyes. Touring as much as we do with few breaks in between can be difficult on anyone. The fact of the matter is, Shane has had troubles with his voice and vocal performances due to stress and physical strain. Simply put, he can no longer continue being our vocalist. Touring isn’t for everybody. Some realize it early on, others later. Shane realized he didn’t enjoy touring long ago, but still pursued the road with us despite the mental and physical struggles that came with it. We love Shane and hope for the best in whatever he does from here on out. We hope all of our fans can understand this difficult decision. We appreciate all of the support over the years and still hope to have continued love and devotion from all of you as we have to you.

Close Your Eyes last released “Empty Hands and Heavy Hearts” last October through Victory Records.
