10 Songs That Made me Fall in Love With Punk – Blue (Masked Intruder)

10 Songs That Made me Fall in Love With Punk – Blue (Masked Intruder)

We recently caught up with Blue of Madison, WI pop punk act Masked Intruder to get his rather hilarious take on the songs that got him into punk rock. Check it out here.

1. Teenage Head – “Aint Got No Sense”

This is probably the first punk rock song I ever heard. I saw it in the movie “Class of 1984” when I was a little kid. That movie rules! It’s about these punks who are like a teenage mafia and they sell pcp and cool stuff like that. Plus, all the punk girls wear so much eye makeup, it’s really hot. I had a crush on the one punk girl from the movie for like, well, I still do. She’s probably older than my mom now though. Gross.

2. Dead Kennedys – “Stealing People’s Mail”

When I first heard the Dead Kennedy’s, I thought it was really funny and weird. after a while of listening to it, trying to understand what the hell, it grew on me. This is a great song off of their best album. It’s a good song because it promotes crime, and it sounds cool and the lyrics are funny.

3. Misfits – “Astro Zombies”

The misfits were an easy band to get into because they were spooky and wrote songs about nasty stuff but then had Glen Danzig crooning like Elvis or something. This song is a great example of that. I always liked the contrast between the poppy, doo-wopy music and the fucked up lyrical content. I have no idea what they are singing about half the time, but it sounds cool.

4. Ramones – “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue”

I love the ramones. This song is a special one for me because it got me really into sniffing glue, which is a lot of fun to do. Back then we didn’t have none of this fancy shit kids got these days, like bath salts or Oxycontin or nothin. We had cough syrup I guess, but the ramones didn’t have any songs about that.

5. Screeching Weasel – “Every Night”

“I always liked screeching weasel, and this is definitely one of my favorite songs by them. I like it cause he sounds so sad and miserable and full of regret, which I can relate to. This song still gives me goose bumps.”

6. MTX – “With My Looks and your Brains”

“I think Dr Frank is probably the best lyricist, like, ever. His songs are always chock full of witty shit. I remember listening to revenge is sweet and so are you in high school about a billion times. I never graduated, but I don’t blame MTX.”

 7. The Vandals – “Nimby”

As a young guitarist, this record was like the holy grail. I mean, it was really impossible to learn how to play because Warren Fitzgerald is so flipping good at playing the fucking guitar. Josh Freese is an amazing drummer too. It’s a dream team, like peanut butter and chocolate, or Abe Lincoln and Spiderman.

8. Hi-Standard – “Lonely”

I got really into Hi-Standard cause they had such great pop sensibility. Plus, they sang a lot of love songs, which I can relate to because I’m in love with girls. The guitar parts are always so cool in hi-standard songs, too. I like it a lot. good job, Hi-Standard!

9. NOFX – “Bob”

This song is about a dude quitting drinking, which is a kinda weird thing to do. NOFX is always singing about weird stuff, which is pretty cool. They also have the trumpet or whatever at the part in the middle. NOFX is weird. I guess that’s why I like ’em. This whole record is great, but something about this song hooked me right away.

10. The lillingtons – “Black Hole in My Mind”

The Lillingtons are super awesome. Science fiction imagery just really goes well with pop punk, and you really gotta hand it to The Lillingtons for putting it together so perfectly. I used to be scared that I would get abducted by aliens. Like, illegal aliens. I was worried that they would take me to Mexico and make fun of me for not knowing how to speak Spanish. That never happened.
