We recently caught up with Garret Dale and Paul Pendley of Oklahoma punk act Red City Radio to get their take on the songs that got them in to punk rock. Check out their lists here.
Garrett Dale’s List:
Operation Ivy – “Freeze Up”
The feeling I got the first time I listened to not only this song, but the album as a whole is easily the reason I felt compelled to find more music that would make me feel the same. Complete.
The Offspring – “The Meaning Of Life”
After realizing this album was not the same as the chart topping singles on “Smash”, my brother tossed this album into the “Fine, my little brother can have it..” pile. He created a 10 year old monster… Thanks Brad!
The Clash – “The Card Cheat”
The Clash is and will always be one of my favorite bands. Most of there songs got me into punk rock. I choose this one because it happens to be my favorite at the time.
Bad Religion – “Do What You Want”
Perfect… Just perfect. If you have a friend who has never heard punk music before… Let’em know.
Osker – “Disconnect, Disconnect”
This song opened my eyes to a different side of punk rock. Idle Will Kill was a huge eye opener for me. It might be for you as well!
Paul Pendley’s List:
Screeching Weasel – “My Right”
This is the song that made me want to play guitar. Nothing flashy here. Just a straight up punk rock song.
The Freeze – “Talking Bombs”
Probably the first non pop punk, non 77-81 punk band I ever loved. Still my favorite band to come from the Boston area.
Civil Disobedience – “Manufactured Citizen”
The first hardcore song that made really start paying attention to the genre outside of Minor Threat and the like. Strangely semi melodic vocals and a funky bass line. Short lived band that floored me until I heard Los Crudos.
The Get Up Kids – “Woodson”
This band was a game changer for me. This song in particular hit me at a critical time in my life and opened my eyes to whole a new aspect to punk rock specificallyand underground music in general.
New Bomb Turks – “Snap Decision”
If you saw me constantly listening to garage rock in 2004 Punk-O-Rama #4 and this band are the reasons why.
