For the first time ever, I approached an Against Me! release with a certain amount of trepidation. “White Crosses,” the band’s last release with Sire Records, was astonishingly disappointing after a full decade of great releases. “Russian Spies/Occult Enemies,” however, does not fail to live up to the expectations that we usually have for Against Me! The first of the two tracks is “Russian Spies”, which has a sound similar to songs from “White Crosses,” but lyrically is much better than anything from that album. It has an honest feeling that was missing from their previous release. However, the memorable part of this EP is the second track. “Occult Enemies” sounds like Against Me! from the “Searching For A Former Clarity” or “New Wave” era. From the vicious opening chords to the last “you better believe their coming for you” this song kicks ass.
This is Against Me!’s best release since “New Wave” and deserves a listen from all fans. The vinyl can be purchased from Against Me’s new label, Total Treble, and it comes with an Mp3 download of the songs.
