Fun Factoid Friday: How the NOFX lead guitarist became known as “El Hefe”

Every Friday the punk rock geniuses here at Dying Scene are going to unleash a little bit of punk scene trivia all over your asses. Today’s “fun factoid” is about the lovable lead guitarist from NOFX, El Hefe.

Believe it or not, El Hefe, is not the real name of the NOFX lead guitarist who can do all those voices and occasionally plays the trumpet.  If you were to check out El Hefe’s birth certificate you’d find that his actual name is Aaron Abeyta and he was born August 8, 1965.  He became known as El Hefe or simply Hefe, from “el Jefe,” the Spanish term for “the boss,” when his fellow band members decided it was a fitting nickname considering his superior mastery of the instruments he plays. And because at the time he joined the band there were already two “Erics”, and that an “Aaron” would just be too much.
