Every Friday the punk rock geniuses here at Dying Scene unleash some punk rock trivia. Today’s “fun factoid” is about one of Sum 41‘s best known songs “Fat Lip”, which is apparently inspired by their heavy metal influences.
There are actually several meanings behind “Fat Lip”, which was Sum 41’s biggest hit from their 2001 classic full-length debut, All Killer No Filler. Not only is it a high-tempo song that the band has ever made, containing elements of hip hop, heavy metal, pop punk and skate punk, but apparently the song was inspired by the band’s heavy metal influences, as they mention Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in the lyrics. Deryck was once asked about “Fat Lip” and said, “the verses are really about what we do: growing up in the suburbs, going to parties and hanging out with our friends, and causing trouble. A lot of people say they relate to it.” Despite being some metal-inspired song, the song actually gets its name from the slang term for a swollen lip as result from being punched in the face.
