Fun Factoid Friday: The Mr. Brett & Epitaph Connection

brett-gurewitzEvery Friday the punk rock geniuses here at Dying Scene are going to unleash a little bit of punk scene trivia all over your asses.  Today’s “fun factoid” is about punk rock icon Brett Gurewitz and the foundation of one of punk’s most influential record labels:

Epitaph Records was started in the 1980’s by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz simply as a logo and a P.O. box with the sole purpose of selling Bad Religion records.  In 1988, Epitaph put out L7’s self-titled album as its first release as an actual label, but it was the release of Bad Religion’s Suffer later that same year that would really spark the label’s growth into the large independent record label that we know it as today.  During the early 1990’s when Bad Religion signed with Atlantic records, Gurewitz left the band to run Epitaph full time and it wasn’t until 2002’s The Process of Belief that he would return. His return coincided with the return of Bad Religion to Epitaph.
