Every Friday the punk rock geniuses here at Dying Scene are going to unleash a little bit of punk scene trivia all over your asses. Today’s “fun factoid” is about punk rock icon Tim Armstrong and his many projects:
Tim Armstrong is perhaps best known as the front-man for legendary punk act Rancid, a band he started with long-time, childhood friend and bass player Matt Freeman. But before the masses new him as Tim Armstrong he used to go by the name “Lint” as guitarist & co-vocalist for Operation Ivy, the band that put punk-ska on the map. After Op Ivy disbanded in 1989, he and Matt went on to form another ska-punk band called Downfall before eventually forming Rancid in 1991. After years of continued success with Rancid Armstrong formed Hellcat Records in 1997 as a sub-label on Epitaph Records where he heads up scouting and has last say on who signs for the label. In addition to also producing albums, he has co-written songs with artists such as Pink and Gwen Stefani. In 2002 he started up the punk-hop side-project Transplants with Rancid roadie Rob Ashton and Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and in 2007 he released a solo album, A Poets Life. These are just some of the dude’s projects. Whether you’re a fan of Tim’s music or not, there’s not disputing the guy has been a huge influence in the scene.
