Fun Factoid Friday: Where the term “Psychobilly” come from?

Every Friday the punk rock geniuses here at Dying Scene are going to unleash a little bit of punk scene trivia all over your asses. Today’s “fun factoid” is about the origins of the punk sub-genre “Psychobilly”.

The term “Psychobilly” was first coined as a musical genre by old school garage punk act The Cramps who became known as one of the first bands to combine the punk rock and rockabilly genres.  The band apparently got the idea from a Johnny Cash lyric off his hit song “One Piece At A Time”.  The line goes like this: “Uh Yow, Red Ryder, this is the Cotton Mouth in the Psycho-Billy Cadillac come on huh, this is The Cotton Mouth..”  From that point on, the band was widely recognized as one of the innovators of a new punk genre.
