If you fancy yourself a fan of pop-punk in the vein of early Lookout Records artists like The Queers or Screeching Weasel it’s time you check out Parasite Diet. The band hails from Paducah, Kentucky and you can stream debut album right here by means of an introduction. We recently caught up with the band to talk origins and plans for the future, which include a new EP, a movie soundtrack, and a growing lineup. Check our the interview here.
Dying Scene (DS): Hey, guys I’ve loved your fun and catchy pop tunes for a while! Tell me how Parasite Diet came together and what influences your sound?
Parasite Diet: Thanks a lot! We started writing and recording together in our apartment for fun. We were in another band together but we wanted to play with some sounds we couldn’t really mess with in that context. Our mutual love for power pop and early Lookout Records style pop punk, cartoons and Mystery Science Theater 3000 triggered the whole thing and it turned out to be my favorite thing I do. We took it out of the apartment and people liked it.
DS: I know you’ve done some touring, what’s your favorite stop on the road?
Birmingham, Alabama was awesome. We played with the Tuffs and they are killer. Austin, Texas was neat too. They really love music down there.
DS: Your cover of “Enola Gay” is one of the best cover tunes I’ve heard in a long time, can you discuss what made you guys wanna do that song? I love this punk rock version!
That was Josey’s call. It’s just a good song and we wanted to play it. And I guess the original arrangement and production were kind of hokey. We stripped it down.
DS: For portly punk rockers out there can you explain how a “Parasite” diet works?
You ingest parasites and they do something or other. Eat your food or something. I don’t know. They’re big in Japan.
DS: What’s happening with the band right now?
We’re in the process of tracking a new EP and we’re working with a film company in Los Angeles to soundtrack a documentary about a street artist. We’re booking more shows and we’ll be playing all over this year. We’re messing with our line up some. We took on a new drummer and I’ll be playing bass guitar. We’ll be a full-time trio for the the first time ever.
DS: When can we expect a new record or EP and what are the new songs like?
We’re wrapping up the tracking now, but we don’t have a release date set yet. The new songs are fun. They’re my favorite stuff we’ve written so far. They’re about video games and girls and we got one about Josey’s old ’97 Cutlass Supreme. And There’s a Neil Diamond cover too. And Liz Prince did the cover art.
DS: What’s your favorite song to play?
Double Jump
DS: Who are some of your favorite bands that are currently playing?
I just heard a new EP by a new band called The Piniellas and I can’t stop listening to it. Orange Iguanas are always good and they work really hard.
DS: Can we expect a Parasite Diet tour anytime soon?
Definitely. We’ll be getting out a lot in 2012 and we’ll put together at least one big tour for 2013.
