Album Review: Limp Wrist – ‘Facades’

Album Review: Limp Wrist – ‘Facades’

Facades is Limp Wrist’s first collection of new songs in almost a decade and their first full length album in even longer- if Discogs is to be believed, they released their self-titled LP in 2001(!). Facades is Limp Wrist’s first collection of new songs in almost a decade and their first full length album in even longer- if Discogs is to be believed, they released their self-titled LP in 2001(!). It’s everything that you would want from a new Limp Wrist album. If you’re unfamiliar with the band (particularly if you’ve only been involved with punk rock for a handful of years), they, and I’m quoting vocalist Martin Sorrondeguy here, “put the ‘-core’ back in ‘queercore.’” Their brand of hardcore is similar to the way that Void and Cülo play hardcore: loud and vicious. Mix in the current political climate in America, and you’ve got a recipe for a great album.

Lyrically, Facades is just as sharp as the music, hitting topics that range between generational gaps (“experiences so old, what could old queens possibly know?” from “Wrap Yourself In Me”) and sexual identity (“men talk about my maleness and how I tamper with the line” from “They Tell Me”), to closeted politicians (“pass laws that harm and destroy / filthy mind- pretend to be straight / closeted you’re falling apart” from “Don’t Want You”) and the privileges of hetero culture (My Spanish is rusty, but I’m pretty sure that’s what “Como Vos” touches on). In one of the album’s more uplifting moments (if you can call it that), “Thick Skin” features advice to any young LGBTQI listeners.

In an abrupt twist, the album’s B-side takes a complete tonal and stylistic shift. The album’s final three tracks, “In My Mind,” “Dead Artist,” and “Systems in Place” are electronic-driven tunes, more akin to what you might expect at a rave in the early hours in the morning. They’re slow burners (if you’re throwing a dance party, don’t start with these tracks), falling somewhere between techno and maybe industrial? I don’t actually know, I’m very much out of my wheelhouse here. But that’s what makes the inclusion of these tracks great- it provides the listener, likely some dumb punk kid such as myself, with a way to see- err…hear- a different aspect of gay subcultures that can’t be expressed through Limp Wrist’s usual style.

Regardless of the genre that Limp Wrist decide to play, Facades is the type of punk album that we need in this day and age. We’re lucky that they’re back.

4.5 / 5

Miguel Chen (Teenage Bottlerocket) to release new book, “I Wanna Be Well: How A Punk Found Peace and You Can To”

If you’ve gotten to know Miguel Chen over the years, either in person or via social media, you’re no doubt aware that in addition to being a proud Wyomingite and, more importantly, bass player for Teenage Bottlerocket, he’s also a pretty devout yoga practitioner. If you’ve gotten to know Miguel Chen over the years, either in person or via social media, you’re no doubt aware that in addition to being a proud Wyomingite and, more importantly, bass player for Teenage Bottlerocket, he’s also a pretty devout yoga practitioner. This coming February, he’ll add another title to that list: published author!

With an assist from Rob Meade Sperry, Miguel has written a book entitled I Wanna Be Well: How A Punk Found Piece And You Can Too. Dubbed “a self-help book for people who hate self-help books,” the book tackles how Miguel was able to begin walking a spiritual path after years of running from his problems. And while books of a spiritual nature can take on a bit of a heady tone, don’t worry: each chapter contains a TL:DR summation in the form of a takeaway point. This is 2017, after all.

I Wanna Be Well is due out February 18th via Wisdom Publications, a leading publisher of Buddhist and mindfulness literature. Pre-orders are available on Amazon right here already. Check it out, and stay tuned for more on this over the next couple months!

The band took to Twitter to talk about the new project: “In celebration of our seven year existence as a band we’ve decided to frequently post these acoustic (maybe sometimes not acoustic) sessions. We have quite a few songs under our belts now, so we figure this would be a good way to shine a new light on our songs. These performances will take place in one location with two songs being played. One song will be old and one song will be new(er). This is the first installment of Something Old, Something New Sessions. Enjoy.”

Boston punk act Rarig’s Kid have announced an EP “Baba Yaga”. You can give it a listen below.

The band had some things to say about the Trump presidency, and took to their Facebook page to express themselves:
“When we started writing songs for our follow-up (and first proper) release a year and a half ago, the world was a different place. The specter of a Trump presidency was eerily floating above our heads in the rafters of public discourse, and no one truly believed that it would descend upon us and blow up in our faces. We have an uniquely American four-year airborne toxic event that seems to be quite adept at belying the decency that (arguably) resides within us all, and is spreading across the tiny planet that we, for better or for worse, have inherited from our forebears. With all that being said, this is not an appeal to verbosity, to pretension, or to sanctimony. This is an appeal to the humanity that we all share, perhaps the one thing that cannot be disputed in the forum. Don’t simply weather the storm. Be the new day that breaks upon it.”

When asked about the song, vocalist/guitarist Mike Weakley said: “I wasn’t looking to write another energetic high-tempo song when looking for the title track. The last EP was full of them. I wanted to write something that reminded me of Blink’s ‘Stay Together for the Kids” or an ‘Adams Song’ chorus. When I belt the hook, it’s big and powerful. The song is about any relationship where if the communication isn’t there, it’s time to let go. I think it came out meaningful and still fun.”
