Canada continues their slow invasion to the south with Grievances hotly thrusting downward from London, Ontario into the placid nethers of Lake Erie. I mean, that’s how I’d do it anyway. Ahem. Band Spotlight: Timekeep – Indonesian sadcore

Band Spotlight: Timekeep – Indonesian sadcore

Timekeep is not something I ever thought I’d be listening to. Specifically, Indonesian melodic hardcore, though the band prefers to describe themselves as “sadcore.” I can dig it. Timekeep is not something I ever thought I’d be listening to. Specifically, Indonesian melodic hardcore, though the band prefers to describe themselves as “sadcore.” I can dig it.

Their debut single, “Suite,” starts off mellow with clean, jangly guitar and stream-of-consciousness vocal delivery that I’m into. A minute into the song, and it’s clear they’ve got a lot more energy than they’re letting on in the intro. I always feel like I’m awful at comparing bands to one another, but this kind of reminds me of early Dag Nasty or Rollins-era Black Flag, but with a more 90s epi-fat sound in the harder parts. The lyrics and vocals are angsty (I don’t mean that as an insult) and like I mentioned, delivered with a stream-of-consciousness, raw feel.

The band lists their influences as Comeback Kid, More Than Life, Casey, and more. They’re currently planning their debut EP.

You can find “Suite” iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon. I recommend going straight to their bandcamp page and throwing them a buck. I’m really looking forward to that EP. Check out “Suite” below. [Read more…]

“Urban Styles: Graffiti in New York Hardcore”, is the debut book from author Freddy Alva. The book is a tribute to some of the most vibrant and gritty street culture New York has ever produced. The book is focused around the hip-hop and hardcore scene in the 80’s and 90’s. Through a series of in-depth interviews with graffiti writers, bands, crews, and historians, Urban Styles examines both the sociological and artistic impact that an outlaw movement of visual art and visceral music had on a generation of disenfranchised youth. The book also includes over 180 vivid photos, most never seen before, tracing the lineage of kids from the hardcore scene and the influence hip-hop and graffiti had on them. The book covers mainly well known NYHC bands such as Murphy’s Law, Burn and Frontline.

“Urban Styles” is a unique tale of two very similar factions of subculture, it is also a study in sociology and youth culture. It is a story about New York City and its boroughs; it is the preservation of a culture and a history many have dedicated their lives to, and it celebrates a time when the city was a wild playground for some of the art form’s greatest visionaries.

Flogging Molly premiered their new music video today on Vevo. The track is titled “Reptiles (We Woke Up) and was directed by the band’s longtime friend Richie Smyth (U2, The Verve) whose unique animation style brings the provocative anthem to life on-screen. The track is from their latest album “Life Is Good”. Check the video out here.

Director Richie had this to say about the video:

“The idea for the video was to take Dave on a journey as he starts to transform in to a reptile. CGI was a cool way to do this. On the surface we see a literal visual rendition of the song like a ‘call to action’ as Dave gathers his army but underneath the surface it’s telling the story of Dave’s early days as a musician. The house he leaves at the start is the actual house he was born and raised in. I grew up with him and we would kick all the chains as we walked home from school. The beach is where we spent our youth. Then Molly Malone’s in Hollywood is where Dave and Bridget first met and the band was born. I shot Dave performing the song so the animators could track his movements onto the CGI character! It’s his actual performance.”

Flogging Molly will begin touring next month starting on October 12th. You can see the full list of dates below.
