He’s got a tie-died Rancid shirt and wears birkenstocks to work. Is he a jerk? No, just confused. Jeff don’t wear regular shoes.
You’ve heard the song. If you haven’t, you don’t own one of the best punk rock albums ever recorded – “Punk In Drublic” by NOFX. Anyway, turns out the subject of the NOFX classic ditty “Jeff Wears Birkenstocks” is indeed a real person. He worked at Epitaph Records back in the day’s when NOFX was on the label and Fat Mike found it quirky that he listened to The Grateful Dead and wore birkenstocks despite the fact he worked at such a decidedly punk rock establishment.
Today, Jeff is in a Los Angeles based punk band called Punk is Dead who is set to release their debut EP “One Hesher, Two Punx, and a Hippy” on October 5th via Northeast Records. The band, also featuring Phil Drazic of Osker, is the only known punk rock band to exclusively play Grateful Dead covers. The EP contains six Grateful Dead classics such as Casey Jones, Playing in the Band, and Eyes of World.
