Jughead’s Revenge formed in 1989 in L.A. and were reportedly named after Jughead Jones, the fictional character in Archie Comics. During the final years of their initial career, the band had nearly lost rights to their name, when Archie Comics sent a “cease and desist” letter to their then-label Nitro Records (owned by Dexter Holland of The Offspring) in 1998 telling them about some violation of their copyrighted artwork and name. When the band just finished touring in support of their fifth album Just Joined, they found themselves being served notice to appear in court and were being sued for copyright infringement.
The lawsuit was eventually resolved in 2000 and the band had to change their name to Jugg’s Revenge. You can read the full letter written by Archie Comics vice president Chuck Grimes here. Apparently, the band didn’t like this move at all and eventually announced their break up in 2001. When Jughead’s Revenge got back together in 2009, they used their original name instead of the Jugg’s Revenge name, and amazingly, the band has never been sued again.
