As you probably know by now, Davy Jones of The Monkees died of a heart attack at age 66 today. Those of us who are of a certain age grew up watching The Monkees and have many fond memories of Davy, Micky, Peter and Mike.

What you may not know is that amateur journalists aren’t the only ones in the punk community with fond memories of The Monkees. Seminal punk band Sex Pistols and genre-defining harDCore legends Minor Threat have each taken their turns covering The Monkees’ “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone.” Click here to check out their versions.

The Sex Pistols’ version appears on 1979’s “The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle,” while Minor Threat’s is from their 1981 “In My Eyes” EP. And yes, we know “Steppin’ Stone” was not originally a Monkees song…but their version stands as the definitive one.
