Why did they choose the name Alkaline Trio?

Ever wonder where some bands come up with their band names? Well, we do, and we’re sick of sitting around scratching our heads about it. We’re hitting the streets (aka. “Internet”) to find the origins behind some of the more bizarre, intriguing or just plain random band names in the scene. Every Wednesday we’ll be pulling the curtain back on a different band and this week it’s pop-punk legends Alkaline Trio.

You know the band.  But you probably don’t know the reasoning behind the band name.  But hat might be in part, because there is no reasoning.  There were three founding members of the band (Matt Skiba, Rob Doran, and Glenn Porter) hence the “Trio” but the first part of the band name is completely arbitrary.  Matt Skiba decided he needed to find a cool work to stick in front of the “Trio” so he just picked up a dictionary and started flipping.  He didn’t need to get much further than halfway through the “A”s before stumbling across “Alkaline”.  He tried it out… “Alkaline… Trio”…  It sounded pretty cool and BAM! – band name born!

  1. That’s ridiculous. As if they didn’t settle on it cos it means “Basic Three Piece”. I don’t believe they didn’t put the tiniest amount of thought into this being the result. You don’t end up in a perfect position like that without some teency but of effort.
