15 songs that made me fall in love with punk Lauren Mills – (DyingScene)

What’s up? My name is Lauren and I spend the majority of my time writing for DyingScene instead of doing other things. I created a feature on this site called “Songs that made me fall in love with punk.” I decided to make a list of my own. I had to make my list 15 songs instead of 10. That way I wouldn’t have to lose any sleep. There are about a billion of songs I could’ve put on here, but these are the ones I picked. I will beat myself up over it later. Check it out here.

1 Sick of it All – “Locomotive”

In my opinion, Sick of it All is the best band of all-time. I love all of their albums, but “Just Look Around” is my favorite. They’re the best live band I’ve ever seen. I don’t care if you don’t like hardcore, go see them. They are an amazing band and awesome guys to boot! I like to play my Sick of it All albums too loudly, but at least I don’t like electro.”

2 Bracket – “Warren’s Song Pt. 25”

Requiem” is quite possibly my favorite album of all-time. I think the words “Bracket” and “Requiem” just automatically fall out of my month every single time someone brings up music. The way this album just cohesively flows together is amazing to me. It’s layered with crazy vocal harmonies and distorted guitars. It’s one of the most unique listens you’ve ever have. I guarantee it.  It’s not for everyone, but it’s criminally underrated.

3. Bad Religion – “Shattered Faith”

Bad Religion lead me to the political side of punk. They lead me to amazing bands like Propagandhi, Strike Anywhere, Nofx, Rise Against Satanic Surfers, Dead Kennedys, Good Riddance etc. It’s hard to pick a favorite album by them but this is undoubtedly my favorite Bad Religion song. It’s actually a b-side from “The Process of Belief

4. The Gamits – “Born and Raised Afraid”

The Gamits are another criminally underrated pop-punk band. “Antidote” is an amazing album. I was extremely late to the party with this band (mainly due to my age), but boy I am glad that I found them. I don’t know what it is about layering and vocal harmonies that I like so much but I love that kind of stuff. ”

5. Snapcase “Caboose”

The thing that I love about most about Snapcase is their lyrics about self-empowerment and self-improvement. Whenever I am bummed about something, this album cheers me up. “Progression Through Unlearning” is an essential album to own. I love how awesome the snare sounds on this album. That may be due to the fact that on most hardcore / punk albums, the percussion is recorded in a way that makes it sound like someone is beating relentlessly on a trash can like George of the Jungle or something. I love punk, but you can’t tell me that I’m wrong.

6. 411 – “This Isn’t Me”

I think of this as the west coast version of Dag Nasty. I may be way off with that, but that’s what I imagine. This is the title track off their full-length album. The whole thing is awesome though. This album is so hard to find, if anyone knows where to buy it let me know please.”

7. Bigwig – “Reclamation”

“Reclamation” is one of favorite albums. I really can’t wait for the new one to come out! If you don’t like Bigwig, you’ll probably hate my taste in music.”

8. Dead Kennedys – “This Could Be Anywhere”

“It’s a shame how the Dead Kennedys ended up in their later years with all of the lawsuits and whatnot. If there’s ever a band the world needs, it’s the Dead Kennedys. This song describes exactly how I feel about living where I do. Jello Biafra is a well of amazing lyrics. I love combining humor and seriousness.. ”

9. Quicksand – “Dine Alone”

I don’t even have to say anything here do I? It’s QUICKSAND! If I do, then you’ve made me very sad. Go buy several copies of “Slip” and distribute them like candy.

10 Bouncing Souls – “Argyle”

Fact: Anyone that dislikes this band, needs to be vanished and go hang out with the abominable snowman because you’re probably pretty cold anyway.

11. Rise Against – “Black Masks and Gasoline”

I know there’s a lot people who don’t like their new direction, but I will always back them.  Rise Against lead me to a lot of rad bands. They are solid dudes with a good message. I know that not everyone likes their more radio friendly sound, but it’s grown on me. Don’t get me wrong, the first two albums are two of my favorite melodic hardcore albums, but every band has to change at some point. I don’t think it was monetarily driven.  The first time I saw them in 08, they dedicated a song to me. I’ll never forget that. The moment was slightly ruined when a fan decided to jump off the balcony and had to taken away in an ambulance. Way to go bro. I am allowed to make that joke because luckily he’s a-OK.

12. Buzzcocks – “Harmony in my Head”

Henry Rollins actually showed me this band. I thought at the time, “Wow, you can write songs about relations and not be super annoying? Awesome! Even though I live in a small town and have never been to a big city, (Unless passing through counts) I love the imagery in this song. Whenever I listen to it, it makes me feel like I’m in a place that’s way cooler than where I live.”

13. AFI – “Coin Return”

For too many years I ignored AFI. Maybe it’s because I’m young and missed their cooler years. They also got lumped together with some pretty horrible bands. It wasn’t until my older brother burnt me a copy of their first few releases that I realized how much I love their music. Now I listen to them all of the time.

14. Guns N’ Wankers – “Help”

This is basically how I feel everyday. It’s a perfect song.  Does anyone else have a song that describes their life perfectly? Lyrically it reminds me of “Four Walls” by Pulley. Both are some of my favorites. It describes exactly how I feel. Everyone gets caught up in their boring lives. It’s difficult to deal with sometimes, but lucky there’s this song for me. I was very late to the party when it came to loving punk rock. I wasn’t born in the new wave seventies, the hardcore eighties and was too young in the skatepunk 90’s. Heck, I even missed most of that 2000’s orgcore stuff. The amazing thing about the net is that it doesn’t matter how old you are, some good music is waiting to be found.”

15. The Flatliners – “Sleep Your Life Away”

I am going to throw in a modern one because I love them so much. The Flatliners can do no wrong in my eyes. They’re such a young band relatively speaking. It makes me super jealous that they can write such rad songs. If you stuck around to read my whole list, you’re amazing. Continue your day knowing this fact. Thank you!

    Nice list mate!
Plenty of good stuff in there. I was lucky enough to get into punk in the 90’s skate punk era and was firmly entrenched in the “orgcore”
