Kate Teague confronts late-night fears and her ‘Poison Mind’

It’s been said that our worst fears often find us late at night, when we’re alone and vulnerable and the darkness allows time and space to mentally fuck with us in new ways. Kate Teague has been up many nights facing these personal demons, and the cycle is at the core of her haunting new single “Poison Mind.” The Memphis-based singer-songwriter releases the single and video today (June 27), part of a larger announcement of a new EP, Loose Screw, […]

DS Band Spotlight: Japan’s Five State Drive mixes ska and skate punk on excellent debut album

Hailing from Nagoya, Japan, Five State Drive may appear to be fresh faced greenhorns, but don’t be fooled: these guys have been cranking out breakneck paced skacore-infused skate punk for a decade now. The band’s new self-titled album is, however, their first full-length release. I’m not bullshitting you when I say penciled this into my […]

Hailing from Nagoya, Japan, Five State Drive may appear to be fresh faced greenhorns, but don’t be fooled: these guys have been cranking out breakneck paced skacore-infused skate punk for a decade now. The band’s new self-titled album is, however, their first full-length release. I’m not bullshitting you when I say penciled this into my Top 10 of 2023 halfway through my first listen. This thing is fucking killer! Think Hi-Standard meets Kemuri with hints of influence from Less Than Jake, Operation Ivy, and 90’s west coast punk. Don’t sleep on these guys.

Boys Like Girls find a glossy groove through the ‘Language’ of attraction

A little over a month ago we all woke up to the first new Boys Like Girls music in 11 years. But since life moves pretty fast in the modern age, we’re now served a second, follow-up joint just a few short weeks later, as the Boston pop-rock band’s vibrant new single “Language” hit the streams this past Friday (June 23). With a slick nod to The Police and Boys Like Girls’ usual knack for melody and production, “Language” is […]

15th anniversary of Offspring's 'Rage and Grace' uses censored tracks, band responds

On June 16, Offspring released the 15th anniversary vinyl re-repress of Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace through Round Hill/Universal. People who bought the album were surprised when they played the album because the newest version uses "censored," radio-cleared versions of the tracks. The band responded stating that not only did they not intend for the censored versions to be pressed, but they didn't even know censored versions existed. The band further stated that they intend to correct the issue. It is unclear exactly how involved Offspring was in the re-release. In 2016, Offspring sold their entire catalogue- masters and publishing- to Round Hill. So, from that information, it appears that Round Hill has the rights to re-release Rage and grace, not the band. However, the terms of the sale may have allowed, or even required, Offspring to promote, endorse, review, and/or be involved in re-release activities. Yet again, it's the same lesson- always listen to your test pressings! You can see the band's statement below.
