The Downhauls rev it back up with a white-hot ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’

Everyone knows that The Bangles’ blistering rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter” — for the equally unfuckwithable Less Than Zero soundtrack back in blissful ’87 — is one of the greatest covers of all time. But we feel like it doesn’t get covered as often as it should, as perhaps because there’s a weird, unfounded fear cranking out a cover of a cover? Who knows. What we do know is that The Downhauls, a Boston punk band […]

In case you haven’t already heard, AFI‘s major label debut Sing the Sorrow turns 20 this year. Yes, 20 years have passed since 2003!

In addition to playing the album in its entirety at the Forum in Los Angeles, the band is releasing a 20th Anniversary colored vinyl reissue. This is the first official pressing since the record’s initial release.

You can get the 20th Anniversary 2xLP reissue of Sing the Sorrow on Red & Black Pinwheel Splatter colored vinyl here (and basically any independent record store in the US).

There’s also a Red w/ Black Smoke color variant that was initially thought to be limited to 2,000 copies and exclusive to that show at the Forum, but it’s since popped up on the official AFI webstore. I’m sure that’ll make all those eBay flippers nice and pissed.

For a weekly rundown of all things punk rock vinyl, check out the Dying Scene Record Radar every weekend!

This Show Is Tonight: Lainey Dionne and friends show off pop smarts

Last we caught up with Lainey Dionne, the whipsmart New England pop artist was busy taking on toxic relationships through the screen of a “Video Game.” Tonight, however, she’s in a much more pleasant — and real-life — setting, hosting and performing at the third installment of her Songwriters Showcase at Galactic Theatre in Warren in her native Rhode Island. Dionne will be joined by nine other songwriters, each performing a handful of acoustic songs after her set, which is […]

Matt Charette is going up ‘Swinging’ as the scene changes around him

Long before Atwood’s Tavern announced it was closing later this month, Matt Charette and the Truer Sound’s record release party this Friday (March 10) stood out as one of the highlights on not only the Cambridge joint’s calendar, but that of Boston music in general. Now the DIY singer-songwriter, Cape Cod native, and owner and namesake of Matt’s Barber Shop in Brighton is set to self-release Lo Fi High Hopes, and his weathered brand of punk-tinged Americana feels appropriate for […]
