In Memoriam: Nik Turner of Hawkwind has passed away

Sadly, Nik Turner of Hawkwind, Inner City Unit, and many other projects has passed away. He was 82. His social media platform released a statement: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Nik Turner – The Might Thunder Rider, who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening. He has moved onto the next phase of his Cosmic Journey, guided by the love of his family, friends and fans. Watch this space for his arrangements." Turner was an incredibly influential member of the music community. He co-founded seminal space rock band Hawkwind with Dave Brock in 1969 and went on to write and/or co-write some the bands biggest hits including "Master of the Universe." After leaving Hawkwind, he formed Inner City Unit, a band that merged Hawkwind's spaciness with new wave and punk. In the 90s and 2000s, he completed many collaborations, including works with Jello Biafra, Genesis P-orridge of Psychic Tv, Helios Creed of Chrome, and Nicky Garrett of Uk Subs. We send our condolences to Turner's Family, Friends, and Fans.

Dream Wife drain the patriarchy’s power with new song ‘Leech’

No group can assemble a raging, sweaty masterpiece quite like Dream Wife. “Let’s Make Out”, our first taste of the London trio? A certified table-flipper. “Sports!”, their elastic 2020 single? Rocket fuel for days. But as the band resurfaces with a new single called “Leech” (released earlier this week), they offer two distinct listening experiences. Half of folks tuning in are sure to seethe — and the other half will sweat bullets. “Do you use and abuse your power to […]

DS Album Review: The Windowsill’s pop-punk prowess shines on “Focus”

Dutch pop-punks The Windowsill have long held a special place in my heart as one of the true heavy hitters of modern “Ramonescore” style pop-punk. Dutch pop-punks The Windowsill have long held a special place in my heart as one of the true heavy hitters of modern “Ramonescore” style pop-punk. Since releasing their last record Make Your Own Kind of Music in 2017, the band shifted focus to their equally amazing side project Giant Eagles, through which they released one of my favorite albums of 2020: Second Landing. But now the focus is back on the Windowsill and their new album Focus (pun very much so intended).

Focus had me hooked from the start with “Can’t Stop Love”. I’m a sucker for albums with well sequenced tracklists, and it’s hard to imagine they could have picked a more perfect opening track than this one. This quick shot of head-nodding, foot-tapping pop-punk was the perfect companion to the energy drink I was sipping the morning I decided to give this album its first listen.

Equally strong is the track that immediately follows: “Poor Buffalo”. This song keeps the momentum going, providing the first heavy dose of the Screeching Weasel-esque “nursery rhyme” style guitar leads that are a beloved hallmark of genre. And plenty subsequent doses of this melodic ear candy are delivered throughout the remainder of Focus.

I could continue to provide a track-by-track breakdown, but that would get boring and I’d undoubtedly run out of words to use. What I will say is that all 12 songs on this record are great, and equally deserving of being individually recognized. But if I had to pick favorites (in addition to the two tracks I already highlighted), I’d probably go with “The Dreams You Used to Sell”, “It’s Killing Me”, “Love You Better”, and “These Tears Are For Real”. I’m sure if you ask me a week from now what my favorite songs are, I’ll have a completely different answer for you.

Focus is an incredible album; one of the very best I’ve heard this year, pop-punk or otherwise. I thought I had my Top 10 Albums of 2022 locked in, but I thought wrong. The Windowsill showed up in the 11th hour and stole a spot on my list with ease. If you aren’t listening to this record, you’re fucking up big time.

Official Review Score: Focus receives Dying Scene’s maximum 5-Star Safety Rating

Focus is available on CD/digital here. For my fellow record collectors, vinyl should be coming in May, 2023.

This Show Is Tonight: Courteeners bring their indie anthems to Allston

You may not be 19 forever, but it could be 13 years since you saw one of your favorite bands play live in your city. That’s the case with Courteeners, the celebrated Manchester indie group who this week return for their first United States live shows since 2009, when they played Coachella and toured with Morrissey (including a House of Blues Boston show). And it kicks off tonight (November 10) at Brighton Music Hall in Allston, just up Harvard Avenue […]

617 Q&A: Drab Majesty embrace the isolation and all that comes with it

Anyone bemoaning an absence of the mysterious or needing a hint of theatricality in music hasn’t walked down the same dark alleyways Drab Majesty inhabit. The brainchild of Deb Demure (née Andrew Clinco), the project has spent the better part of a decade concealed behind dark glasses, platinum wigs, and smoke-filled stages, leaving the focus on a pastiche of synth-based goth and airy melodies that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Friday night in the bedroom of an early […]
