This Show Is Tonight: feeble little horse keep it ‘Real’ in Somerville

The unrelenting Big Content Industry (BCI) demands a continuous stream of releases from bands in 2025, designed to keep momentum and buzz rolling atop all our social feeds and ensure that artists are permanent fixtures on not only our playlists, but also in our hearts. It’s a grind. We long for the days when a single song — an absolute fucking belter — was enough to feed the masses, to steady a beat forward for weeks and months and maybe […]

Jillian Shriner plea deals to mental health program, avoids jail

In April, Police were searching for three suspects involved in a hit run. During the chase/search, the police wound up in the backyard of Scott Shriner of Weezer and his wife, Jill Shriner, who is a best seller author. Neither of the Shriners were suspects or involved in the hit and run incident. According to the police, Jill was in her backyard and had a legal gun. The police say that Shriner refused to drop her gun, so they shot her. The wound was serious, but not life threating. Jill was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder before later being charged with assault and negligent discharge of a firearm.Last week, the Judge overseeing the matter approved a plea deal between Shriner and the DA. Jillian will undergo a two-year mental health diversion program and avoid jail time. The county district attorney’s office will dismiss the charges upon completion of the program.

Dying Scene Album Review: Bad Cop Bad Cop — “Lighten Up”

Lighten Up starts in a deeply political direction, angry at the state and its machines. To stare at the systems in place and, with your fist tightly clenched, resist them as harshly as you can. Lighten Up starts in a deeply political direction, angry at the state and its machines. To stare at the systems in place and, with your fist tightly clenched, resist them as harshly as you can. The rest of the album continues in this trend, rollicking between deeply personal moments of self-examination and the feminist punk rock Bad Cop Bad Cop got famous for. The theme of internal strife runs through it, from drug abuse and recovery in “Straight Out of Detox” to anti-ICE and anti-Trump sentiment in “Human is Human.”

Overall BCBC has had one sound throughout their discography, and this album continues that sound. Bass, guitar, drums, and a female vocal lead. Reminiscent of an early Offspring album, the sound is fairly consistent with each of their previosu albums, even down to the progression of the songs within the album. Four strong, two soft, four strong again. The cyclical nature of their work seems to be continued from album to album and that cycle hasn’t changed at all with Lighten Up.

In isolation the album is wonderful–pure punk rock goodness, wonderful bass lines and tight solos (the guitar solo at the end of “I4NI” comes to mind.) But the entire album feels almost exactly the same as every album they’ve already put out. The lead singles were an indication of this, with the aforementioned “I4NI,” “Strugglinh,” and “All Together Now” providing an exact sample of what nearly every song on the album will sound like. That’s not to say the album isn’t good, and it doesn’t make its messages heard. It just sounds like every other album put out by BCBC in the past ten years, and while that sound is good, if you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, I would look elsewhere.

ToriTori croons enchanting R&B on new single ‘You Don’t Know’

ToroTori is moving on from her Pocket Knife era, but her rhymes are as sharp as ever. “You think it’s cold? Wait ’til winter comes / I’ll be the storm that you tremble from,” she professes on “You Don’t Know,” the Boston R&B singer’s new tune. The single and its accompanying music video both arrived earlier this month, issuing what’s either a captivating warning, or the most ominous seduction we’ve ever heard. Whatever the case, it’s a shiver-inducing home run […]
