Mic’d Up: Chris Fleming returns for a triple dose of beautiful chaos

It may be Super Bowl week, but since the Patriots aren’t in it, and a certain midwestern team is, the only “three-peat” we’re truly interested in seeing ’round these parts is that of Chris Fleming. Using that phrase in the most playful sense (largely without wanting to get sued by Pat Riley), Fleming returns to The Wilbur for a little week’s end magic across three sold out shows starting on Thursday (February 6), and stretching deep into the usual excitement […]

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by Punk Rock Radar:

Batting leadoff this week we’ve got Canadian pop-punk veterans The Riptides with their new record Burn After Listening, due out March 7th on Pirates Press Records! Check out the lead single “End of the World” down there 👇 and pre-order the record on two beautiful color variants (limited to 250 copies each) right here.

Also due out March 7th, German skate punk band Heathcliff’s new record Postcard from a ParaHell Universe! This one’s available to pre-order on a bunch of bad ass variants, each of which is limited to 150 copies, from Double Helix Records (US), Bearded Punk Records (EU), and Pee Records (AUS). Heathcliff will also have a band exclusive color variant available at their record release show and other shows in 2025.

More new music! The Kilograms took the ska world by storm with their self-titled debut EP last year, and now they’re following that up with their first full-length effort Beliefs & Thieves, due out April 4th on Rad Girlfriend Records. Fronted by Mighty Mighty Bosstones bassist Joe Gittleman, The Kilograms’ star studded lineup also features former Bouncing Souls drummer Michael McDermott and Sammy Kay, among others. Check out the title track from Beliefs & Thieves below and pre-order the record here. There will be an indie exclusive variant available in record stores as well.

Even more new music! Holy fuck! Fans of old school pop-punk (which some may refer to as Ramonescore) and/or regionally distributed lagers will wanna pick up the new Ghost Party record STAG! This is available as a 12″ EP with a bad ass etched B-side from Mom’s Basement Records (they also have CDs!) and on an extremely limited run of cassettes from Memorable But Not Honorable Records.

SBAM Records has opened enrollment for their 2025 SBAM Records Club, which promises “stuff from Frenzal Rhomb, Bowling For Soup, Leftover Crack, DFL, Guns ’N’ Wankers, Mad Caddies, Snuff … any many more!!!”. 250 euros (not dollars, euros) gets you twelve (12) LPs, one (1) fancy pants liquid filled LP, and digital copies of all the music. Head over to SBAM’s European store and subscribe now! Fair warning: shipping to the states is kinda a deal breaker but it is what it is.

DCxPC Live is releasing a cool-ass compilation featuring tracks from Flatfoot 56, Working Class Stiffs, PWRUP and many others, all recorded live at last year’s Camp Punksylvania festival! This is limited to 200 hand numbered copies on yellow colored vinyl and you can get it right here, right now.

Canadian folk punk favorites The Dreadnoughts released their latest album Green Willow digitally a few years ago, but until now it has not been available on any physical format. Our friends at Punkerton Records are fixing that, announcing a 5 color variant vinyl release, due out May 16th. These are very limited and selling fast; get your copy here! CDs also available for my fellow CD enjoyers 💿

Kepi Ghoulie has a new two-song 7″ coming out next month, featuring covers of “Our Love Survives” by the Thermals and Daniel Johnston’s “Happy Soul”. This is limited to 400 copies on red colored vinyl, available to pre-order now from Eccentric Pop and The Machine Shop (US), as well as Stardumb Records in Europe. 25% of all pre-order sales will be donated to Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) who is providing cash and resources to victims of the Los Angeles fires.

New England hardcore veterans Fastbreak’s 1998 debut album Fast Cars, Fast Women is getting its first vinyl reissue in over 25 years, available to pre-order now on six awesome color variants. Here’s a list of all of them:

Available from Deathwishinc.com
– Red / Black / Blue Racing Stripe (150 copies)
– Black & Blue Smash (300 copies)

Bridge Nine Exclusive
– Blue / White Splatter (200 copies)

Revelation Records Exclusive
– Yellow w/ Black & Red Splatter (200 copies)

Thirty Something Records Exclusive
– Nova Red (100 copies)

Static Era Records
– Blue (100 copies)

And we’ll end this week’s earnings call Record Radar with some forward looking statements, the first of which relates to The Gamits! It’s been a while since we last heard from The Gamits, but they seem to be back in action and seem to have some exciting stuff in the works. First they dropped a new single “In the Red” seemingly out of nowhere (it’s awesome, check it out below 👇) and immediately after that they announced a vinyl reissue of their debut album Endorsed By You, just in time for its 25th anniversary! It’s not available to pre-order yet but I just wanted to give you a heads up. Keep an eye on Flail Harmonic Records’ webstore and, of course, the Record Radar to know when this record is available to pre-order.

And last but not least we’ve got a very early Record Store Day announcement coming from The Dwarves, who have revealed they’ll be releasing a long lost record called Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows for Record Store Day 2025 (that’s April 12th). A few bullet points courtesy of The Dwarves:

– Never before heard complete LP recorded live in studio 1989

– Full color PICTURE DISC / Full color GATEFOLD SLEEVE and Full color INNER SLEEVES

– Featuring DOZENS of never seen Michael Lavine PHOTOS from the notorious BLOOD, GUTS & PUSSY cover shoot and never seen Charles Peterson LIVE DWARVES PHOTOS

– You MUST get this on Record Store Day April 12, 2025!!!

Fair enough!!!

Well, that’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave us a comment below, or send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next time!

DS News: Murder By Death call it a career, announce farewell tour

In sad but I suppose somewhat not unexpected news, long-running indie-rock band Murder By Death have decided to hang up their spurs later this year. Originally hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, Adam Turla and Sara Baillet and company spent a quarter-century plying their unique “spooky Western” musical wares before deciding recently that it was time to quit while they were ahead. Here’s an excerpt from band leader Turla’s statement:

We weren’t covered much in the press, we never had a song that had a lot of radio play, nothing ever went viral, we didn’t have a big social media presence, we never played a good festival spot where there was a sea of people in the audience, not once opened an arena or even a big shell auditorium show or tour. We constantly lost opportunities because of the band name and were somehow always treated like nobodies or yesterday’s news by most of the industry. But you, you gosh dang wonderful audience, managed to keep us growing, and we never had a career slump.

When we were our busiest — playing over 200 shows a year — we were chronically underpaid and always barely scraping by. But people kept writing us or telling us how much we mattered and kept showing up, and we started to believe it a little. And then over the years, we grew to a more manageable place and it seemed possible to carve out a niche in this massive, mean world of entertainment.

When I reflect on how good our career was and how lucky we were, I’m left with just gratitude for the small team of folks who have worked with the band and this grassroots fan following that has lifted us up the entire time. I feel like we owe any and all our success to you.

I never called us DIY — despite taking on much of the work ourselves — because there are always people behind the scenes helping: it takes a village. Thank you to the promoters, clubs, bands, managers, agents, artists, publishers, lawyers, publicists, crews, etc. etc. etc. who believed in us and everyone who made this work for so long. An enormous thank you to those of you who helped us through the many difficult periods.

Thank you for your relentless support, your passionate listening, and your generosity.

The band went on to say that they are presently working on a final album, and they also announced a fairly lengthy going-away tour that kicks off in Bloomington in June and wraps up in their newer hometown of Louisville, KY, in November. They’ll also continue on with their annual Cavern shows in Tennessee and the odd festival date down the road, so it’s not necessarily “good bye” good bye, but it’s pretty close, Dates and support acts are below and most tickets are now on sale.
