TIFFY delivers a double whammy of reinvention on new EP ‘2’

It’s a double whammy from Somerville’s punky one woman show: TIFFY has dropped 2, an EP that pairs two totally-new tunes with two reinventions of past releases. The new project is half-mirror, half-gazing ball, reflecting TIFFY’s original scrappy sound while also rounding out her riffs with a more lush approach to instrumentation and production. 2 lends her work a more dreamlike quality, even when she’s tumbling through the nightmarish cycles of email followups (“Lost In The Shuffle”) and the ever-changing […]

‘Cuckoo’ Review: Hunter Schafer can’t escape a dull movie

As I’ve alluded to in the past, the Vibes-Based Horror Movie is in vogue, in which logic, reason, thematic construction, tonal resonance, storytelling coherence, and all-around scrutability (I know this isn’t a word, but roll with me here) take a backseat to the smooth sailing of a “just roll with it, bro.” It’s interesting how you could read it as a reaction to the Ari Asters of the world, who have made hollow yet heavily manicured features that have some […]

‘Borderlands’ Review: Eli Roth runs out of ammo

It’s somewhat silly to admit this, but I think it needs to be said: I, for whatever reason, root pretty hard for Eli Roth. Sure, the guy’s not an overwhelming underdog – he’s made pretty decent movies in the studio system, he’s probably the most handsome man ever to direct a horror picture, and if all else fails, he can hit the convention circuit as the Bear Jew and probably make a killing – but for whatever reason, he’s become […]

5ever park their pop-punk for new single ‘Life Is A Driveway’

Life is a driveway, and 5ever want to host a cookout there all night long. The Boston band parks their effervescent pop-punk to soundtrack a backyard bash in their single and video “Life Is a Driveway,” which arrived earlier this week (August 5). The release bears no resemblance to Tom Cochrane’s 1991 song “Life Is A Highway,” nor Rascal Flatts’ reimagining of it — praise the lord — and instead wraps self-effacing lyricism around another of 5ever’s anthemic refrains. It’s […]

In Memoriam: Dave Sweetapple of Witch, Eerie, and Sweet Apple has passed away

Dave Sweetapple, of Witch, Eerie, and Sweet Apple, has passed away. He was 58 years old. No cause of death has been made public at this time. Along with playing in bands Dave Sweetapple also worked with Mag Wheel Records and Tee Pee Records. Damian Abraham of Fucked Up paid tribute to him in an Instagram post that reads in part, RIP DAVE SWEETAPPLE The first time I met Dave was at the 2008 SXSW. I approached him and @jmascis at a show @fuckedup was playing and he immediately asked me is I knew about Sudden Impact and within minutes we were exchanging our favorite Schzoid songs and bonded for life. Dave’s impact on music was immense and too big to sum up with a single band, really. While he certainly played in some amazing bands, he also took photos for countless zines and records (Dag Nasty’s 85-86, to name one). He also co-ran the awesomely underrated Mag Wheel Records, in its early years; as well as doing behind the scenes work at Tee Pee Records. I can’t tell you how much it hurts to know I’ll never get to talk Maritimes punk and HC with him again. Sending love to the whole @dinosaurjr extended family. I love you all so much. Roadburn Fest also paid tribute to Dave Sweetapple in an Instagram post which reads,Dave Sweetapple left an indelible mark on the lives of many, many people and will be sorely missed. Not only was he a talented musician himself but he also nurtured creativity in others, as a mentor, facilitator, and guide. His companionable manner and effervescent mischievousness marked him out as a one-off. He was a confidante, a supreme storyteller, a collaborator, and – most of all – a friend to us. Thank you for the good times, Dave, we couldn’t forget you if we tried. We send our condolences to Dave Sweetapple’s family, friends, and fans.
