Dying Scene Gallery: Punk Rock Bowling Day Three – Gogol Bordello, Stiff Little Fingers, Quicksand and more (Las Vegas 5/27/24)

I’m not saying we were hungover, but we made it down to the pool party at the beginning of Day Three and couldn’t bear to leave the shade by the bar, let alone get up front by the bands. After a little fortification we made it to the main festival in time for …

Stiff Little Fingers, original ’70s punks from Belfast who were rocking it in the overly bright sunshine…

Followed by Gogol Bordello who are fantastic live every time we’ve seen them.

From there we moved to the second “party” stage to catch Quicksand, post-hardcore from New York, new to us and and such a fascinating sound.

The headliner for the final day were Madness, but we were not getting back near the main stage, so we only have the photo at the top of this page, though hearing all the old classics was fun, even from a distance. From there we headed to Backstage Bar & Billiards on Fremont Street for a final club show:

Bad Ass are a bunch of young punks from Riverside, CA with an amazing look, and opened up the show

Up next, Die Spitz are an astonishing all-woman punk band from Austin, TX who played the party stage at the main festival earlier in the day. We were completely blown away and will be watching these ladies in future.

And finally, the Subhumans from the UK, good old hardcore and friends of ours, finished up our 2024 Punk Rock Bowling experience.

SASAMI slings a seismic romanticism on the cinematic ‘Honeycrash’

There’s a thunder brewing overhead, and it has nothing to do with summertime storms. The source comes suddenly from SASAMI, the Los Angeles artist who throws down a mighty contender for Song of the Summer through a masterstroke of seismic emotion called “Honeycrash.” The track dropped two weeks ago (May 29), complete with a video directed by Andrew Thomas Huang (Björk, FKA Twigs), and it feels like our own personal soundtrack over the next few months as summer flings evolve into […]

The ‘Smile 2’ trailer bares its creepy teeth

Well, we’ve got a lot of things to smile about today. In case you somehow missed it, the Boston Celtics won their 18th NBA championship on Monday night, and did so in dramatic fashion. Well, “dramatic” might not be the right word to use — “emphatic” would be a little better. Al Horford’s finally got his ring after seventeen years in the league, a number so crazy that we had to spell it out instead of using the numerals. Head […]

Exclusive Videos: Watch a new video by Substitute!

Today we are thrilled to bring you the premiere of the new video by New York-based punk rockers Substitute! The video is for their song “Crossroad Game” which was shot by Tim Kaplowitz and directed and edited by Space Octopus. Speaking to Punknews about the song and video, guitarist and vocalist Paul Ridenour said, "For this song, we wanted something that visually reflected the style and tone of the song, and I think the look of distorted video naturally goes pretty well with the sound of distorted guitars. We shot it on a really hot day in our practice space when the AC wasn’t working so we all look sweaty and gross, which I think is great. The song is about taking big, stupid risks because the world can be ugly and dark, and the thrill and the sadness of surrendering to them." “Crossroad Game” is off their album Manic which was released in 2023. Substitute will be touring the Western US and BC starting tonight. Watch the video below!
