Mike and Erin from Fat Wreck Chords launched a new imprint would like to announce a new imprint on Fat Wreck Chords. It’s called Bottles to the Ground (BTTG) and it is a label curated and owned mostly by Mike and all the members of NOFX.

BTTG will be featuring mostly artists that are not Fat sounding bands. It will also feature bands and projects that members of NOFX are involved with such as Codefendents, Melvinator, Home Street Home, and Fat Mike Gets Strung Out… There will be a 12 song comp coming out early next year featuring all the new bands.

Codefendants – “Living Las Vegas”

"Living Las Vegas" - Codefendants

Release Date: January 19, 2024 Record Label: Bottles To The Ground Release Type: Single

I’m sure you know by now that we here at the Dying Scene Corporate Office are big fans of Codefendants. Last year’s debut record, This Is Crime Wave, ended up on a number of our year-end best-of lists. Lest you think that the brainchild of Sam King, Ceschi Ramos and, of course, Fat Mike, was a one-and-done type of situation, the group has unveiled a brand new single, “Living Las Vegas.” The lead track features some of the King, Ramos and LA underground legend 2Mex chopping it up in a way that pushes their unique and relentless styles up a notch or three. It’s backed by another new track, “Counting Back From 13,” which might be my favorite Codefendants track yet? Maybe? I think it is…

Anyway, check out “Living Las Vegas” and make sure you pick it up on special 10-inch colored vinyl via Bottles To The Ground, ya heard?

With the sheer quantity of shows I’m seeing these days, very seldom do I recognize mid-performance, or even after the fact, that what I’m witnessing ranks among the best shows I’ve been to. Sure, somewhat recent examples may include my first experience with Frank Turner, or photographing Daikaiju inducing utter mayhem in a wall-to-wall packed club. But this Codefendants show may rank higher than both of those, holding a more significant spot than almost any show of my recent memory, and for a variety of reasons.

I’ll be the first to reveal that, initially, I wasn’t super fond of Codefendants, for no other reason than I didn’t give them the time of day. I’ve mentioned in the past that my musical preferences are extremely closed-minded and, for the most part, I’m very set in my ways. So when I first caught wind of the project featuring the trio of Fat Mike-Sam King-Ceschi Ramos, I didn’t have much interest in exploring the newly termed genre of “crime wave”. It wasn’t until close to three weeks after their full-length, This Is Crime Wave, hit streaming that I gave it a chance. And when I say this record may be a game-changer for me, I’ll be surprised if anything dethrones this thing from the top spot on my ongoing Records of the Year list. Even now, nearly a month after finally giving This Is Crime Wave a fair shot, I find myself listening to it on the daily.

With this record came a newfound respect for all the artists featured on the release. This release, more so than really any others in my recent recollection, showcases an insane amount of songwriting dynamic, displaying a kind of musicianship that appeals to fans of genres that have seemingly no similarities to punk rock. I found myself holding the songwriting of Sam King, Ceschi Ramos, Fat Mike, and even Stacey Dee, to a higher regard, as well as diving into the legendary career of the DOC and digging into what Onry Ozzborn’s extensive catalog has to offer. This is one of those records that I can cite as helping to expand my musical taste a little bit further outside the strict confines of punk, a feat that is becoming more and more difficult to achieve.

After recognizing the grasp that this release took on my airwaves, I was already looking forward to this show. Any chance to hang with the Zeta dudes is time well-spent, especially getting to see them back a band that’s gaining significant momentum. Additionally, this would be my first in-person run-in with both Ceschi and King, two guys whose prior projects I’ve followed pretty closely as well.

This show had it all, blowing every expectation I had out of the water. Codefendants, featuring their mesh of hip-hop, punk, and just straight-up lyrical-badassery, had two openers that fit right in with fans of hip-hop or punk rock.

Rap Ferreira leaned more towards hip-hop, but gave me major Chris Farren vibes with his one-man-band type of performance. Armed with only a microphone and what I can only assume was a small table full of electronics that do tons of cool stuff that I don’t know shit about, Ferreira achieved a stage presence and flair that rivals many full bands I’ve encountered.

I continue to enjoy Zeta‘s live show more each time I come out, even with this being my fifth show of theirs in the last year, with at least one more scheduled for June. They’re a killer bunch of dudes that have poured their life into playing music and I envy the hell out of their dedication and motivation. I was beyond pumped when the announcement came of them playing this tour, and I was even with Juanchi (featured right) when the announcement came through.

Their musical style is hard to pin down, but I’ll settle on the experimental-punk label. I mean it’s hard to pin a band down to one genre when all their shows end with each member playing different percussion within a drum circle. But I hope to not spoil too much as I’ve got an interview with 50% of Zeta due out very soon.

Holy shit were these guys good. Codefendants sounded as professional as anyone I’ve seen and I was in pure awe watching some true professionals go to work.

What stuck with me more was seeing their emotion shine through, reinforcing how much they had previously revealed that these songs meant to them (interview due out very soon as well). I found myself once again realizing that punk’s honesty and genuine nature are what I truly love about the world’s greatest fucking genre.

Having had the pleasure of catching Codefendants first ever tour was one for the books, and I’m still riding a high from this show as I’m doing this write-up. Both Zeta and Codefendants are absolute workhorses, so do yourself a huge favor and catch them live. Codefendants has been on all the Punk in Drublic dates and were recently announced as openers for Avenged Sevenfold as well, so catch a show and have a ball just like I did. Zeta has an upcoming full US tour with recently announced Festers Sparta, so go say what’s up to four of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met.

As always, thanks for checking out the site. Cheers!

DS Record Radar: This Week in Punk Vinyl (Epitaph Overload! Bad Religion, NOFX, Osker, Pridebowl, Spring Heeled Jack & more)

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

Check out the video edition of this week’s Record Radar, presented by our friends at Punk Rock Radar:

Epitaph Records is stealing the show this week, unleashing snazzy new color variants for like a dozen different records: Bad Religion being the primary beneficiary. Up first is this eye popping EU exclusive multicolor splatter pressing of No Control (limited to 500 copies). As I’m writing this, I’ve realized it’s already sold out… but just look at that shit, it’s beautiful! There’s a new yellow EU Indie variant as well; here’s one of the places you can get that.

Next up in this week’s BR represses is Against the Grain. This is another EU-only pressing, with 500 copies on clear w/ yellow and purple splatter colored vinyl available on Epitaph’s European merch store. There’s also a EU Indie variant for this one, on orange / black marble colored wax – get that here.

And finally we have All Ages, which has also been repressed on two new color variants. Europe gets 500 copies on “bone w/ red & black splatter” colored wax (get it here), while ‘Merica gets 1,000 copies on “buttercream” colored vinyl (get that one here).

More Epitaph stuff! I promise we’ll get to some other labels’ releases at some point on this week’s column. Two NOFX records with European exclusive pressings, the first of which is S&M Airlines. 500 copies of this one on “orange smoke” colored vinyl – get it here.

The other NOFX record getting a new color variant is (the very underrated in my opinion) Pump Up the Valuum. And, once again, this black & white split colored LP is limited to 500 copies, and is only available on Epitaph’s Kings Road EU store.

Alright, it’s almost over! Our last Epitaph release this week is Osker’s Idle Will Kill, back in print for the first time in a long time. There are three color variants – pink w/ black splatter (buy here), Smartpunk Exclusive(!) “hot pink & black smash” (buy here), and Banquet Records exclusive neon pink / black (buy here). And if you wanna save a few bucks, grab the plain ‘ol black LP on Amazon.

Let’s talk about some other things now, shall we? One of my favorite albums of 2023 is NOT’s Stop the World. If you missed out on the sold out first pressing of this record on purple vinyl, good news! It’s getting a second pressing on “ocean blue” colored vinyl (limited to 300 copies). Don’t sleep on this one, get it here (US), here (UK), or here (Japan). Must-have record for Descendents / ALL fans, and enjoyers of great pop-punk in general.

Six years after its initial release, third wave ska-punk veterans Spring Heeled Jack‘s latest album Sound Salvation gets its first-ever vinyl pressing. Asbestos Records doesn’t specify a color variant, but if Discogs is to be believed, this is limited to 500 copies on translucent record colored wax. Get it here. And on a related note, Spring Heeled Jack just released a new single! It’s great a cover of fellow New England ska vets Bim Skala Bim’s “Diggin’ a Hole”. Check it out:

Pridebowl‘s 1997 Where You Put Your Trust LP is back in print for the first time in 25 years! Spain’s La Agonía de Vivir is reissuing the record, with 100 copies on cyan blue colored vinyl and 200 copies on black wax. Our European readers can get both variants here / inhabitants of North America can save some money and get the black wax here.

Captain, We’re Sinking‘s debut album The Future Is Cancelled turns 10 this year so, naturally, a commemorative reissue is in order. 500 copies available on red / blue / yellow tri-color vinyl here. Two bonus tracks! The band will also be playing some full-album shows to celebrate the anniversary.

Look, it’s something other than a reissue! Ska legends Fishbone have announced their new self-titled EP, due out May 26th on Fat Wreck imprint Bottles To The Ground. It was produced by Fat Mike and features most of the band’s original lineup. Pre-order the 12″ EP here.

And last but not least, we have From Down to Dawn, the latest EP from Italy’s Minus Hero, due out June 2nd on Punk Rock Radar, White Russian, and Cat’s Claw Records. Check out the first single “Rosa” below, and get the record here (US), here (EU), here (UK), or here (Italy!).

Well, that’s all, folks. Another Record Radar in the books. As always, thank you for tuning in. If there’s anything we missed (highly likely), or if you want to let everyone know about a new/upcoming vinyl release you’re excited about, leave us a comment below, or send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, and we’ll look into it. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t blow too much money on spinny discs (or do, I’m not your father). See ya next week!

DS Record Radar: This Week in Punk Vinyl (Frenzal Rhomb, Codefendants, ALL “Mass Nerder”, Record Store Day 2023 & more)

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. This week’s Record Radar is yuge, one of our biggest yet. Kick […]

Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

A few weeks ago, we broke the news that ALL‘s Mass Nerder is getting a 25th Anniversary reissue. The first color variant revealed was a purple/green marble LP, which sold out within a few hours. If you missed out on that one, the good news is that more variants are starting to pop up. You can grab it on “galaxy green/purple” colored vinyl from Loud Pizza Records. Stay tuned for a lot more variants.

Frenzal Rhomb announced their new record The Cup of Pestilence, due out April 7th on Fat Wreck Chords. My fellow Americans can pre-order an unspecified color variant from the Fat webstore; European friends, Kings Road Merch has you covered. Aussies have a few options: Artist First has gold vinyl, JB Hi-Fi has a brown variant and an exclusive grey LP that comes with a bonus signed print of the cover art. Check out the lead single if you haven’t already:

In other Fat-related news, NOFX frontman Fat Mike and Get Dead singer Sam King’s punk/hip hop crossover project Codefendants will release their debut LP This is Crimewave on March 24th through Fat Wreck imprint Bottles To The Ground. Colored vinyl and bundles are available on the label’s webstore. If you just want black vinyl, Target‘s the way to go – they’ve got the record listed for $15.79 (and you save an extra 5% and get free shipping with a Red Card). Amazon‘s the second cheapest option if you have Prime.

One of my favorite albums of 2022 is getting the vinyl release it deserves thanks to Shield Recordings. I gave The Windowsill‘s latest LP Focus a much-deserved five star review and have been eagerly waiting for the day I could buy it on vinyl. This record is a must-have if you’re a pop-punk fan. Grab it here (US) or here (EU). 300 copies on transparent yellow / 200 on black vinyl.

Keeping the pop-punk theme going, our friends at Stardumb Records are celebrating their 100th release in style. They’re putting out a box set with The Apers‘ first three LPs and two records’ worth of bonus tracks. If you just want the LPs, those are available individually with unique color variants as well. They have links to all the places around the world you can get these from on their Linktree.

Asian Man Records just restocked a bunch of Alkaline Trio records on their webstore. Goddamnit, Maybe I’ll Catch Fire, and the self-titled LP are all back in stock on Asian Man’s patented random colored vinyl. The pressing info says these were meant to be distributed to record stores; they’ll probably be out of stock again soon enough so act fast.

The release list has been revealed for Record Store Day 2023, set to take place on April 22nd. This is a punk site so we’ll be highlighting the punk stuff, starting with the Ramones Pleasant Dreams (The New York Mixes). “Limited” to 7,500 copies, this release has the original mixes by producer Graham Gouldman, plus three bonus tracks from the album’s recording sessions, and alternate artwork (which I can’t help but notice omits Marky Ramone). Anyway, this shit looks cool and I’m gonna buy it because I’m a Ramones fiend.

Next up we’ve got OFF! with a 12″ EP featuring 8 B-Sides from their latest album Free LSD. It’s very creatively titled FLSD EP and it’s limited to 2,300 copies on purple(?) colored vinyl. The album was bad ass, this should be good, too. Tell your local record store to stock it!

New York Hardcore legends Agnostic Front are getting in on the Record Store Day action with an expanded 40th Anniversary reissue of their debut EP United Blood. It’s limited to 3,000 copies and features a bunch of previously unreleased recordings of the band’s early material.

Frank Turner‘s Tape Deck Heart is getting a 10th Anniversary reissue with an entire bonus LP of demos tacked on. This ‘RSD First’ release is limited to 1,500 copies on maroon colored vinyl with new art and a bunch of new liner notes from Franklin. Fawk yeah!

And our last sooper punk rawk RSD release is The AdictsFifth Overture, which is getting reissued for the very first time since its original release in 1986. No bonus tracks or anything like that on this one, but apparently it comes with a new “inner bag” (whatever the fuck that’s supposed to mean). It’s limited to 2,000 copies and your local record store is the only place you’re (potentially) gonna find it.

Holy shit, you got to the end!
