Ian Winwood releases new book “Smash!: Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion, NOFX, and the ‘90s Punk Explosion”

For those of us punks who grew up in the 90’s our glory years were filled with a different era of punk rock than the 70’s. Kids tired of 80’s hair metal or 90’s pop music (remember Hanson?!) turned to a wacky world filled with band’s like: Social Distortion, NoFX, Bad Religion, Diesel Boy and so on and so forth. In recent years we’ve seen the blossoming punk scene of the 70’s looked back on so fondly, but we’ve never had a real look back at the resurgent 90’s punk scene. Well we will wait no more! Renowned writer Ian Winwood is releasing Smash!: Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion, NOFX, and the ‘90s Punk Explosion a biographical look at the resurgence of punk rock in the 1990’s.

Two decades after the Sex Pistols and the Ramones birthed punk music into the world, their artistic heirs burst onto the scene and changed the genre forever. While the punk originators remained underground favorites and were slow burns commercially, their heirs shattered commercial expectations for the genre. In 1994, Green Day and The Offspring each released their third albums, and the results were astounding. Green Day’s Dookie went on to sell more than 15 million copies and The Offspring’s Smash remains the all-time bestselling album released on an independent label. The times had changed, and so had the music.

The book is out now and you can grab it wherever you get your reading material.
