Videos: Make War: "Not Today"

Jeff Schroeder leaves Smashing Pumpkins

Jeff Schroeder, guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins, has announced that he is leaving the band. The announcement about his departure came in two statements – one from him and one from the rest of the band – which were released on Instagram. His statement reads, ”"It's easy to say now that when I joined The Smashing Pumpkins in 2007 I had no idea what I was getting into. The opportunity seemed to have come out of nowhere. I was at UCLA working on my doctorate in comparative literature when a close friend messaged me and said The Smashing Pumpkins were looking for a guitar player. Being a huge fan of the band, the audition was something I threw myself into. It was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. The amount of incredible memories created over the last 16 years with the band are almost too numerous to quantify. Although it was a very difficult decision to make, I've decided to leave the band to make some space to explore a slightly different path. I want to thank Billy, Jimmy, James, and Jack for being both wonderful bandmates and even better friends. I will absolutely miss sharing the stage with you. I wish the band all the success in the future. I will be watching and listening.” The statement from Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, and James Iha reads, "We thank Jeff for his ceaseless dedication to the band and our great fans. Words can not express our gratitude and appreciation for the friend he is, and being there for SP in the good times and the tough times, too.” Jeff Schroeder had been with the band since 2007. The band released their 3 part album Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts in 2022 and 2023. See the post in full below.

Off with Their Heads performed a SOLD OUT show at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago. Opening bands Dead Bars, Black Cross Hotel, and Brox were a great addition to this killer lineup.

Chicago’s own Off with Their Heads performed an “All Request Set” where their hometown fans requested the songs that they wanted to hear. Led by vocalist/guitarist Ryan Young, the band recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Home album. Let’s see what the next 10 years bring! It was a great night. Find them near you here.

Seattle-based Dead Bars brought their brand of Pacific Northwest punk rock to a sold out Chicago audience. The band were celebrating their 10-year anniversary and appeared to be having a blast! Many in the crowd were familiar with the band but all went wild for their cover of the Ramones’ “Pet Sematary”! Find them near you here.

Post-punk, industrial band Black Cross Hotel performed songs from their debut HEX album. They were a great local addition to the lineup and it just so happens that their keyboardist, Andrew, is a neighbor of Ryan from OWTH. Find them near you here.

Performing under the name Brox, Chicago-based vocalist/performer Scott Walker delivered a wild show with elements of folk, garage rock, no wave, noise, and pop music, reminding listeners of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Jarvis Cocker. Spicing up their neighborhood, Scott also lives near Ryan from OWTH and Andrew from BCH. Check him out when you can!

DS News: Green Day announce new album “Saviors,” unveil video for first single “The American Dream Is Killing Me”

So unless you’ve been living under a rock – I guess it wouldn’t be a punk rock, would it?! – you’re probably aware that Green Day debuted a new track, “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” last week at a club show in Vegas. Our own Brittany Queen was there! And as you probably assumed, that means they’ve got a brand new album coming down the proverbial ‘pike. And now we know what that looks like!

Due out January 19th, the band’s 14th (I think I did the math right…) studio album is called Saviors. Here’s what the band says about it:

Saviors is an invitation into Green Day’s brain, their collective spirit as a band, and an understanding of friendship, culture and legacy of the last 30 plus years. It’s raw and emotional. Funny and disturbing. It’s a laugh at the pain, weep in the happiness kind of record. Honesty and vulnerability. What is Saviors about, you ask? Power pop, punk, rock, indie triumph. disease, war, inequality, influencers, yoga retreats, alt right, dating apps, masks, MENTAL HEALTH, climate change, oligarchs, social media division, free weed, fentanyl, fragility,,.. What would Andy Warhol do? What would John Waters do? What would Quentin Tarantino do? What would GREEN DAY do?

Saviors is available for pre-order in all the usual options. And more importantly, the video for “The American Dream Is Killing Me” is also now available. Keep on scrolling and check it out!

Letters to Cleo return with new 7-inch ahead of anniversary shows

A new murder tune from Letters to Cleo wasn’t on our 2023 bingo card, but you won’t hear us complaining. Ahead of Halloween — and the band’s Aurora Gory Alice 30th anniversary shows — the Boston band has pressed a new 7-inch record, their first new music since 2019’s OK Christmas EP. The release offers the new songs “It’s Sunny Outside” and “Bad Man,” the latter of which paves a grisly, hard-earned road to safety and freedom for a righteous protagonist. […]
