Zola Simone and Tomas twirl euphoric pop for new collab ‘Pirouette’

It takes two to tango “Pirouette.” When Zola Simone was holed up in her dorm at New York University last fall, a zippy ditty came to her: “She don’t dance around it / Don’t do no pirouetting.” With a hook in place, the Boston-raised pop artist quickly found her new creation twirling to life — until it came time to pen a second verse, and her lyricism suddenly fell out of its turn. Determined to maintain the song’s momentum, Simone dialed […]

Listen to the new song by the Subjunctives!

Today we are thrilled to bring you the premiere of the new song by Seattle-based pop punk band The Subjunctives! The song is called "I Don't Have Time" and is off their upcoming album Let's Try This Again. Speaking about the song, the band said, "'I Don't Have the Time"' started out as a 12 String guitar jangle-pop song that Ean wrote for Tales from the Birdbath, his twee side project of many years. The title was originally 'Always Gonna Be Your Guy' and it was slow and a little too sweet. Ean brought the song into the Subjunctives, who sped it up and promptly tossed the verse. For a hot minute, the song was called 'I Learned To Play the Drums', this was also tossed. Jeff asked if he could have a go at the verse, and came back a few days later with a Nirvana Molly's Lips / Jawbreaker Boxcar arrangement and new lyrics about 'not wanting to deal with bullshit from stupid people'. The end of the song is a bit of a nod to the Mr. T Experience's 'Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba', but for Jeff, 'the 'Ba Ba Bas are me tuning out'. The song represents one of several examples on Let's Try This Again of the band developing beyond 'Ean songs' and 'Jeff songs', and instead creating true collaborations. This phenomenon is known as 'Ean and Jeffunkle'." Let's Try This Again will be out on September 16 and you can pre-order it right here! Listen to the song below!

Don’t be soft on the ‘Dicks: The Musical’ trailer

It’s been seven years since Larry Charles, a key component of the Seinfeld brain trust and the director of Borat and Bruno, released a movie, and even longer since one of his films got a proper theatrical rollout. Well, bitches, he’s back. He’s gonna serve you up a movie called Dicks: The Musical later this fall, which features the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Meghan Mullally, and Bowen Yang in a musical about two long-lost brothers trying to […]

Break-ups: Muncie Girls break up, announce farewell tour (UK)

Muncie Girls have announced that they have broken up. The band released a statement on Instagram that reads, After nearly 13 years, a demo CD, a demo tape, three 12” EPs, three 7” singles, a 12” split record and two albums, we’re saying goodbye to our band Muncie Girls. We started this band when we were 17 and the biggest goal we could muster up was to release a 7” single. We ended up doing more things and going to more places than we could ever have imagined. We were lucky to be from a town with such a brilliant music scene and venue, the Cavern, and I remember how it felt to travel to so many cities and discover other scenes just like ours. The community we found ourselves a part of was so special and really became our lives. If it weren’t for the kindness of total strangers putting on shows for us, feeding us and letting us stay at their houses, we would never have been able to do any of the things that we’ve done. We were even once temporarily adopted by a family in Texas when we went to play SXSW and they baked us cherry pie and drove us to our gigs. We were taken on a tour around Australia by complete strangers who became some of our best friends. We went to Japan after some strangers offered to book us a tour and we travelled around on trains and borrowed local bands’ gear, guitars, everything. We spent most of our time touring in mainland Europe where we made friends for life, playing in squats, venues, gardens, bunkers, wherever. I often heard stories of bands having to sleep in their vans or in parks or service stations. We always had somewhere to stay, no one ever let us sleep rough. I know we were incredibly lucky and we have our scene and our friends and fans to thank for that. We’ve relied so much on people’s kindness; I hope that we were always grateful enough. We’ve decided to do a farewell tour and we hope that you’ll join us at a show. Muncie Girls will always be a massive part of our lives and we will each always play music, just in different projects now. Thank you everyone!” The band’s farewell shows will take place in the UK this fall. Muncie Girls released B-Sides The Point in 2020 and Fixed Ideals in 2018. Check out their post in full below.

DS Album Review: Diesel Boy – “Gets Old”

Listen, I’ll be upfront. I was ten when Diesel Boy released their last album “Rode Hard and Put Away Wet”, and I initially didn’t hear it until I was 19. So that, for me, made this period of longing for new material a little shorter. I’m 31 now, so the period here isn’t as intense as […]

Listen, I’ll be upfront. I was ten when Diesel Boy released their last album “Rode Hard and Put Away Wet”, and I initially didn’t hear it until I was 19. So that, for me, made this period of longing for new material a little shorter. I’m 31 now, so the period here isn’t as intense as many have waited. But still, like many, I couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to the band. With Gets Old, Diesel Boy are back, and the past 22 years have benefited from their break.

If we look at the opener ‘Lost Decade’, it could come off as the average punk song. But they take the piss out of themselves and give fans a sense of what they’ve been up to since they’ve been gone. Is it a reunion if no one cared we were gone or that we’re back?” and those lyrics are funny.

This quickly became my favourite song. ‘Viking Funeral’ starts with what I imagine is Gjallarhorn, but I’m pretty sure it’s regular horns playing. The lyrics are heavy and could hint towards a break-up that left someone with a heavy heart afterward. ‘Corpse Paint Blues’ is a pretty pop-punk song about some nice coffee shop and dreaming about suburban life. I felt this song was grown up, longing for the earlier years when things seemed simpler. ‘Two Stones’ hits differently. Lyrically it seems somber, and while the rest of the album hasn’t been “light” on the lyrics, to be honest. The guitar solo and the sound overall remind me of an 80s song. Friends, this may very well be one of the nicest album-closers I’ve heard this year.

22 years is what it took for Diesel Boy to return, and I hope they don’t take another 22 years to release a new album. Because this was fun to hear from them, I think it’s a good comeback album, and no matter what they sing in ‘Lost Decade’ I care that they are back! And you should be too! Check out this album; if you’re at Brakrock this week, remember to check them out!

Soda Blonde give in to our human impulses on ‘Bad Machine’

For many of us, the most freeing moment of our lives is when we finally stop keeping score of all the missteps and mistakes we make as we travel through each day, accepting the highs and lows as part of the routine and ultimately hoping to just come out ever-so-slightly on the plus side. Self-acceptance and the path to it takes many forms and avenues, and right now ours is soundtracked by Soda Blonde’s vibrant new single “Bad Machine,” which […]
