Sound Museum musicians told to vacate Brighton facility by end of January

Come February, scores of Boston musicians will suddenly no longer have a rehearsal space to call home. The Sound Museum, Bill “Des” Desmond’s long-standing practice and recording facility at 155 North Beacon St. in Brighton, posted a note to its 300 tenants over the weekend that states all bands and artists must vacate the building by January 31. “As fellow musicians we’ve considered the Sound Museum and the Boston music scene our community and musical family for 40 years,” the […]

Sad news to kick off Christmas week. Terry Hall, the iconic vocalist of legendary, genre-defining 2-Tone ska band The Specials, has passed away after a brief illness. Hall was 63. If you’re only aware of Hall through his music, he had a pretty incredible life story, particularly his early years. Check out the bio the BBC did here.

As you might imagine, love and respects have been pouring in from all corners of the music world.

“Ghost Town” might have been The Specials’ biggest commercial hit, but “A Message To You Rudy” was the first Specials’ song I ever heard, so let’s all check it out together and reminisce.

Fraser Murderburger has released a new four-song EP from his latest project Absolute Melt. It’s a lot less poppy than most of the former Murderburgers frontman’s previous work, but it’s a nice change of pace nonetheless. Check it out below! The physical release on a limited lathe cut 10″ is sold out (and raised over £600 for Scottish Women’s Aid!). You can still buy it digitally here.

Absolute Melt is one of a few projects Fraser is working on right now. His other band Wrong Life recently released an LP titled Early Workings of an Idea and I’ve heard they have another record coming soon.

DS News: British skate punks Crash-11 stream new album “I’m Sorry, I Was Wrong”

My favorite thing about writing for Dying Scene has always been discovering new bands. One of my more recent discoveries is Crash-11, an awesome skate punk band hailing from Bristol, UK. Their sound mixes the speed and melodicism of bands like No Use For A Name and Atlas Losing Grip with the hard-nosed aggression of […]

Their sound mixes the speed and melodicism of bands like No Use For A Name and Atlas Losing Grip with the hard-nosed aggression of early Sum 41.

The band just released their debut full-length album I’m Sorry, I Was Wrong and it is excellent. Give it a listen below and head over to their Bandcamp page to grab a copy of the album; they even have CDs!

Dayton, Ohio’s Houseghost made waves in 2020 when Rad Girlfriend Records released their self-titled debut LP at the height of the pandemic. Dayton, Ohio’s Houseghost made waves in 2020 when Rad Girlfriend Records released their self-titled debut LP at the height of the pandemic. On their new album Another Realm, the band fronted by the brother-sister duo of Nick and Kayla Hamby delivers more lo-fi pop-punk with thematic horror punk lyrics. They call it “spooky punk”, and I think that’s a fitting description.

The whole record is great (it probably would have been on my “Best of 2022” list if I hadn’t already made it lol). If I had to choose a few standout songs, I’d go with “Heart Up”, “Pretty Red”, “Nameless”, and the Lillingtons-esque “Night in the Woods”.

If these guys aren’t already on your radar, I highly recommend giving Another Realm a listen below. And if you’d like to support Houseghost, you can do so by grabbing a digital copy of the album here (I’d recommend picking it up on vinyl, but it’s sold out!).

sadly, Terry Hall of the specials has passed away. He was 63. The cause of death was an unspecified illness. The band issued a statement: "Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and leaves behind the gift of his remarkable music and profound humanity."
