Chain Reaction to close this month, announces final shows

Anaheim-based venue Chain Reaction has announced that it will be closing at the end of December. The venue announced this news in an Instagram post which reads in part, ”For almost 30 years, Chain Reaction has proudly fostered the alt-music scene by creating a space for a community that the outside world “just didn’t get”. From your local bands gaining their footing at their first shows, to the humble beginnings of huge acts you now love, we’re grateful to have held a place in this scene for as long as we did. This call wasn’t made quickly. We wrestled with it and have ultimately made the decision to close our doors. We want to thank every band, fan and attendee of our shows. We want to thank the scene that supported us for almost three decades. We want to thank you for the friendships and memories made in our special club. Thank you for supporting us through the years and when we needed it most. CHAIN REACTION FOREVER.” Chain Reaction will be holding its final two shows on December 18 and 19. Movements and Militarie Gun will be playing on both dates with Underbrook joining them on December 18 and Cheridomingo joining them on December 19. You can see the statement in full below.

Year in ReView: Vanyaland’s favorite homegrown songs of 2025

Well, that happened. 2025 was definitely a year, a whole 12-month rollout of the most absurd political and economic developments in recent memory. (A presidential administration accidentally texting out military strike plans? Kim Kardashian hawking faux-hair thongs? The tsunami of AI slop rapidly overtaking the equally-vapid Internet ragebait made by actual humans? How can a loving god permit such lunacy?) But the end of the year is always ripe for counting blessings, and as 2025 comes to a close, we’re […]

Nick Offerman sculpts a fine night of comedy at Chevalier Theatre

As the age-old question goes “How much Nick Offerman could a man offer if a man could offer a man named Nick?” The answer, apparently, is at least one show’s worth in Medford in 2026, and we’re delighted at that fact. As announced earlier this week, the accomplished actor, comedian, and resident romantic woodworking lumberjack will be making his way back to Medford’s Chevalier Theatre on April 18, as part of his expanding Big Woodchuck tour. In support of his […]

Mic’d Up: Eugene Mirman hits up some besties in Somerville

At some point earlier in the year, Eugene Mirman called some of his pretty good friends on the phone. As it turns out, they weren’t just good friends, but also excellent comedians who, evidently, answered that call and agreed to join him for a show in Somerville, and that show is finally upon us. Making his way back to Davis Square on Thursday (December 11), the delightfully quirky comedian and Bob’s Burgers star has assembled a bit of an Avengers-type […]

Year in ReView: Vanyaland’s favorite needle drops in the films of 2025

Every major awards show has a “Best Original Score” and a “Best Original Song” category, and most major critics’ groups at least give awards out for the former. But the landscape of movie soundtracks has changed drastically over the years, and the needle-drop is nearly as important. The Big Chill, Risky Business, Reservoir Dogs, Goodfellas, Guardians of the Galaxy, and a billion other examples I can’t be bothered to list out — the needle-drop is an essential part of modern […]
