‘Drop’ Review: A great argument to turn off AirDrop

Christopher Landon’s Drop has one of those eye-catching, high-concept-yet-relatable premises that the extremely online moviegoer begs for but very rarely pays money to see. “Hey,” it says to the viewer, “have you ever had dumbass kids Airdrop you inappropriate memes in public places? You have? Well, what if those kids were trying to get you to murder someone? And, if you didn’t, your whole family would die?” That, my friends, is what we call a motherfucking hook. Landon’s quickly becoming […]

‘Warfare’ Review: Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza deliver a stunner

I’ve made no secret that I hated Alex Garland’s last two films, which saw the once-zany-brainy screenwriter forsake the talent that made him successful for directing, which made him a sort of martyr among film people. His adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer’s Annihilation was successful because it was, well, an adaptation: He could follow the story beats laid out in front of him (for the most part) and devote his focus to aesthetics. It scared Skydance, only surviving the whims of […]

Mic’d Up: Josh Gondelman and friends team up for Mike Dorval benefit

Editor’s Note: It’s the same thing we all know in love when it comes to Vanyaland’s recurring weekly live comedy rundown, Mic’d Up — just a slightly different face. We’ll be hyping club shows, theater and arena gigs, open mics, and whatever else to help fill your free time with some much-needed laughter. Sometimes, you want to go where everybody knows your name. However, it’s also nice to be in a place where you know who has your back on home […]

MARINA serves up a sexpot anthem with ‘CUNTISSIMO’

Oh, the knee-weakening ecstasy of MARINA singing about a wrecked marriage and luxury in the same sentence. “On the street, sweet-talkin’ / Push-up bra in my diamonds / Gift from my ex-husband,” the Welsh pop star brags on her new single “CUNTISSIMO,” released today (April 11). The song and its accompanying music video are a decadent revival of MARINA’s Electra Heart ethos: Bubblegum brattiness aged to perfection, delivered over a sizzling bed of synths. The new song arrived with an […]

Check out this unreleased Dwarves track from 1989!

Today, we are PSYCHED to debut an unreleased Dwarves track!!! Back in 1989, The Dwarves got commissioned to do a 2 song single via the Sub Pop singles club. So, they went up Reciprocal Recording in Seattle to record with Jack Endino… except, the Dwarves being the Dwarves, they had so much berserk, coke fueled energy that instead of JUST recording two tracks, they whipped out an entire album's worth of material in something like two days! Influenced by Iggy Pop's style of recording, the band did a live in studio session to capture live energy, but also to get some semblance of studio production. But, aside from the tunes released on the sub pop single, the rest of the tracks went into the archive and the Dwarves record a separate album, the iconic Blood, Guts, and Pussy, something like a year later. Well, FINALLY, these archived tracks are finally getting released TOMORROW, on Record Store Day, as Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows. The long lost release bridges the gap between the band's early garage rock days and the hardcore explosion of BGP. Ya gotta get out to RSD to get this bad boy, but you can hear "Gash Wagon" below! Oh, also, did you know that Dwearves are co-headlining Punknews Summer Soiree 8 with Hip Hop legend Schoolly-D on July 31 in Philly? You can get tickets to that right here! You can calos see their other live dates below!
