Andrew Sacher announces 'Emo Revival' book

Andrew Sacher, editor of BrooklynVegan, has announced that he will be releasing his debut book. It is called Emo Revival: Community, DIY, and Rebirth in Post-Hardcore and Emo (2008-2018) and will be out on September 8 via Clash Books. The book’s official synopsis reads in part, ”Emo didn’t start with the rise of bands like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance and it didn’t end with their turn-of-the-2010s drop-offs either. When emo faded from the mainstream, major players in the music industry were ready to move on. The genre looked like a fad that was passing. But it didn’t die; it went back to the basements and VFW halls that it began in decades earlier, fueled by a new crop of bands who kept emo alive when no one else would. Andrew Sacher explores why and how these bands turned the fourth wave of emo into one of the most impactful underground rock movements of its time. Informed by over 80 original interviews, Sacher offers a deep dive into the generation of bands that restored the musical values and DIY ethos of emo’s past in order to shape its future. Emo Revival is a story about countless great records and powerful live shows, but even more so than that, it’s a story about community. None of this would have happened without an influx of like-minded bands, record labels, show bookers, and fans who reinforced that “DIY” is really about doing it together.”The book features interviews will bands including Algernon Cadwallader, Title Fight, Modern Baseball, Joyce Manor, Touché Amoré, Citizen, Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate), The World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, Tigers Jaw, The Menzingers, Pianos Become the Teeth, Joie de Vivre, Cayetana, PUP, Circa Survive, and Thursday. See the announcement post below.

In just under two weeks, Doll Fest returns to California’s Bay Area for the second annual edition of its all-femme festival, following the success of last year’s debut. Taking place March 27–29 at The California Ballroom in Oakland, the weekend promises two days of live music, community, and celebration. With the festival quickly approaching, now is the time to secure tickets before they’re gone!

Doll Fest is much more than just a music festival; it’s a celebration. Founded by Maria Chaos, Doll Fest celebrates feminism, community, and the power of supporting one another. After decades of women being marginalized in the music industry, Doll Fest provides opportunities to empower marginalized voices that are often underrepresented. The festival honors activism, the Riot Grrrl movement, and the importance of women’s voices in music, creating a space for empowerment, resilience, and collaboration. By uniting like-minded people through music, art, and culture, Doll Fest amplifies feminine energy and community in a way that is inspiring. As stated on dollfest.net, “We are still battling for true equality against the archaic non-values of patriarchy, still fighting for the power over our own bodies, and still proving our worth as voices to be heard. Doll Fest intends to bring together like-minded folx who embody the true spirit of Doll Fest – through empowerment, resilience, and nurturing of communities. We are anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia, anti-racist, anti-police violence and strictly anti-fascist.”

This year, Doll Fest has expanded the celebration further than just the main weekend. Earlier in the month they hosted a “pre party” in Mexico City on March 6th and 7th, featuring DJ’s, meet and greets, and appearances from artists including Alice Bag, Bloody Benders, Trap Girl, and Ultraviolentas.

The Bay Area festivities begin Friday March 27th with a “pre fest” show at The Ivy Room in Oakland. With the lineup featuring Skip The Needle, Beneath You, Last Minet, and Wonderland Rejects, this undoubtedly is going to be a great time.

The next day, they’re moving things to The California Ballroom where attendees will have the opportunity to support various awesome vendors, make some friends, and enjoy live music from 2-10pm! There are some standout acts on the bill, like The Hellflowers, Suzie True, Descartes A Kant, and VIAL. The celebration continues Sunday, with another powerful lineup that makes it clear Doll Fest is bigger than ever. Performances from Bitchfit, War on Women, Girl in a Coma, and Bad Cop Bad Cop promise a high energy finale that you don’t want to miss. With a weekend packed from start to finish, this year’s Doll Fest proves once again why it has quickly become one of the most exciting and important femme centered festivals in the scene.

Interviews: Talking 'Une ville, une mine, un cancer' with Simon Turcotte of Guhn Twei

Earlier this month, Rouyn-Noranda-based Guhn Twei released their excellent third album Une ville, une mine, un cancer. Building on their previous albums, 2023’s Glencorruption and 2024’s Capitale de l’arsenic, the band talks about the past, present, and future destruction of the environment as well as the health of the city’s citizens with some of their sharpest and most vulnerable lyrics to date. The band also kicks out some of their heaviest instrumentation to date, blending together elements from death metal, hardcore punk, and noise to create evocative soundscapes that bring you to toxic lakes, hospitals, and right outside the copper smelter itself. Une ville, une mine, un cancer is available everywhere now via Slam Disques. Guhn Twei will be touring Quebec this spring. Through the power of the internet, Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with vocalist and bassist Simon Turcotte to talk about the album, songwriting, incorporating the sounds of the city into “Suicide collectif”, and so much more. Tosh Peterson is Alkaline Trio's new drummer

Back in February, it was announced that drummer Atom Willard had leftAlkaline Trio. Now, the band has announced that their new drummer is Tosh Peterson, who has played with Fall Out Boy, Filter, Lady Gaga, Machine Gun Kelly, and Bad Bunny among many others. The band announced this in an Instagram post written by Matt Skiba which reads, ”THIS guy. I met @tosh_thedrummer at Swingers a few months back for lunch to meet up and discuss the possibility of him playing in @alkaline_trio. Tosh’s mom was also there who turned out to be a fellow history buff so her and I spent half the lunch talking about Churchill and the Miracle of Dunkirk while Tosh politely ate his fries. He later told @danielandriano that if we had had a problem with his mom coming to lunch he probably didn’t want to play with us anyway. Apart from the absolute MONSTER he is behind a drum kit he is just a lovely guy: KIND, polite, enthusiastic, driven and HILARIOUS. I told Dan I wouldn’t want Tosh to play with us if he HADN’T brought his mom. [emoji with sunglasses] Tosh is a beautiful human being we’re very excited to travel and play music with and a drummer we couldn’t be more thankful to be able to welcome into OUR family.” Alkaline Trio will be touring the US with Rise Against starting in September and released Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs in 2024.
