Mic’d Up: Chris Gethard brings punk rock vibes to Cambridge

Comedy

The idea of being a “comedy rock star” is not a title easily attained. However, it’s considerably harder to maintain an approach as a “comedy punk rocker,” but Chris Gethard, as we will see up close and personal this weekend, has the secret stuff to make it happen. Throwing down at The Comedy Studio for two shows on Saturday (July 18), Gethard returns to the area for what feels like too rare of a show in Massachusetts. Along with his […]

Fat Mike starts vodka business

news

Fat Mike of Nofx is now in the vodka business. The angle is that it is cheap because all vodka tastes the same, so it is called "Fatty's Bottom Shelf." As per Mike, "“I personally tasted over five different recipes of very similar tasting vodkas before I decided that I couldn't really tell the difference between them. So I told the professional vodka makers to go with the one that's the easiest to make. What we ended up with was a vodka that tastes almost like good tasting vodka! Almost all of my good friends have separately said to me, ‘I've had worse.’ Well, if it's almost good enough for them… it's good enough for me!”The booze is 40% ALC. If you buy a pack of the beverage, you can also get an exclusive Fat mike 7-inch.

Bleached Cross embrace a spectral bond of lost love in ‘Blood Moon’

Music

The air we breathe is burnt in a suffocating haze, our food is defiled to render us incapacitated, and the water supply is evaporating to fuel an artificial creativity only the soulless seem to desire. So it’s easy to see we have the sweet release of death on our minds, solely as a means of escapism from the modern confines that are slowly eroding a once steadfast will to live. Bleached Cross are giving us a compass to explore humanity […]

The ‘I Play Rocky’ trailer asks, “Why Stallone?”

Film/TV

After a brief sojourn back into the comedy mines — someone out there apparently did watch both Ricky Stanicky and Balls Up — Peter Farrelly’s back at the surface, ready to breathe in that sweet middlebrow air once again. First came Green Book, then came The Greatest Beer Run Ever, now comes I Play Rocky, which will probably premiere at TIFF in a few weeks (you pretty much have a standing invite to debut your new films gala-style at the […]

Andrew Garfield revolts against the crown in ‘The Uprising’ trailer

Film/TV

Now here’s a Paul Greengrass movie we can legitimately get excited for. All the things we normally dislike about the Bourne innovator’s style — faux-doc shaky-cam and other hyper-modern styles — are genuinely interesting when used for stories set in the distant past (yes, we are the very few, the proud, the brave, the folks who liked Michael Mann’s Public Enemies because of its attempt to do something interesting in a period context). So, Greengrass’s latest project, The Uprising, which […]
