‘Civil War’ Review: An empty, vapid attempt at provocation

Alex Garland’s filmography is best viewed as if he were two entities – one a screenwriter, the other a director – who have had a tumultuous time together after some initial successes. It’s no secret that I’m a big admirer of Garland’s writing work, with his collaborations with Danny Boyle being among the best films in the director’s career that don’t involve giant shit-and-piss covered Scottish toilets, and even his most routinely-mocked script, Sunshine, doesn’t deserve half of the slander […]

Interviews: Check out the new track from the new album by JD Pinkus of Butthole Surfers!

Today, we are THRILLED to debut the new video by JD Pinkus of The Butthole Surfers! Plus, we have a Q+A with him, too! On June 7, Pinkus will release his brand new album, Grow a Pear, via the iconic Shimmy Disc label. As you might expect, the record is totally far out.The album finds Pinkus cranking out low, rumbling, twisting mindfreak music… and a lot of the tracks have him playing the banjo. Quite uniquely, the LP locks together the spirit of Appalachia with the astral-tripping of dark psyche- think slamming down a pint of moonshine and then eating a bunch of acid. And moreover, many of these songs are actually tunes from a never-to-materialize Butthole Surfers album! The debut track, "Charmer," has a sinister slithering while Pinkus drops menacing backwater strings over the creepy crawl. The tune feels ancient and metaphysical. Although the track is instrumental, it feels like Pinkus wants you to see the world through the eyes of Serpentes. It's rad.You can check out the suitably freaky video below, along with a Q+A with Pinkus about the album and a loooong list of tour dates where Pinkus will open for Buzz of The Melvins. All of that good stuff is below. Slither on!

The Rosies opened up the night with high-octane energy, keeping true to their own artist bio:

Fueled by cheap beer and the power of lightning, The Rosies are here to fill your ears with the sound of the truth. From Cleveland, Ohio these Lake Erie Surf Punk rockers are all about high energy, good vibes, and just being yourself. So crack open a cold one and enjoy the ride.

Local Indianapolis hardcore band Senescence might have stolen the show with their heavy hooks and stage presence alone. They clearly have a dedicated fan-base who sang along to all their songs, thrashing and dancing throughout. Senescence proved themselves to be exemplary examples of Midwestern hardcore punk.

East LA-based post hardcore band Death Lens was another band I was super stoked to see. How a band can be both chill and have in-your-face hype energy is something I am still trying to wrap my brain around. Their Epitaph Records debut album Cold World will be released on May 3rd, but you can listen to some of their singles right now to tide you over until then (“Vacant” really slaps!)

Finally, the two-piece garage punk duo Teen Mortgage took the stage to a now packed venue of fans of all ages. An older gent told me how excited he was to finally see this band live, and I told him the same. The diversity of fans this night was unreal.

In true punk fashion, the songs were short, fast, but packed an intensity that left you begging for more.

Side note: Drummer Ed Barkauskas is a super nice and cool guy (I was not paid to make this statement, I swear).

Teen Mortgage came from the ethos of Washington, D.C. DIY culture, eventually touring with the likes of OFF!, Alkaline Trio and Red Fang. Their self-titled LP is streaming now and also available at King Pizza Records (if you can get your hands on it!)

Do NOT miss them at a show this year!

Check out each of the galleries from the night below!

Chappell Roan doesn’t miss a beat on new synth ballad ‘Good Luck, Babe’

Chappell Roan is just absolutely going for it. Still on the ascent via last year’s breakout debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and currently on a sold-out headlining tour and an opening arena slot run for Olivia Rodrigo, which just rolled through town, the modern queer icon delivered another sticky-sweet alt-pop bop this past Friday (April 5) in “Good Luck, Babe,” a seductive synth ballad that explores leaving behind a romantic relationship to explore authentic love […]
